The Weight of Wandering
Nikos had always felt the pull of distant horizons.
E.g. :The altar lights exploded moments before "I do," leaving my groom screaming in darkness.

His life in the small coastal village of Karystos, though peaceful, felt too small for his spirit.
He was a merchant's son, but his father often spoke of ancestors who were not mere traders, but keepers of forgotten ways.
These whispers of a hidden lineage often fueled Nikos’s wanderlust.
He packed a meager satchel and set out, seeking adventure amidst the crumbling pillars of ancient Greece.
His journey led him deep into the mountainous spine of Arcadia.
This land was rumored to be the birthplace of gods and monsters alike.
The air grew thin and cold as he ascended, carrying the scent of pine and something else, something primal and electric.
A strange foreboding settled over him with each step.
He told himself it was just the isolation, the vastness of the untamed wilderness.
Yet, a part of him knew he was not merely traveling; he was being drawn.
A Guardian’s Desperate Plea
The sun dipped low, painting the sky in fiery streaks of orange and violet.
Nikos hurried, eager to find shelter before night fully claimed the desolate path.
Suddenly, a massive shadow detached itself from the ancient olive groves ahead.
It resolved into the powerful, imposing form of a Centaur.
This was no ordinary beast; his hide was scarred, his eyes held the wisdom and weariness of ages.
“Don’t look back,” the Centaur rumbled, his voice like stones grinding together, deep and resonant.
His tone carried a desperate urgency, a warning that chilled Nikos to the bone.
The Centaur, named Theron, held up a gnarled hand, his gaze fixed on some unseen point behind Nikos.
Nikos instinctively froze, heart hammering against his ribs.
Why was this legendary creature here, in this remote place?
More importantly, what was behind him that commanded such fear from a being of myth?
The Echo of the Gorgon
Defiance, born of youth and a burgeoning sense of destiny, flared in Nikos.
He slowly turned his head, ignoring Theron’s increasingly strained grunts of protest.
There, far down the winding path, between two ancient, twisted olive trees, stood a figure.
It was a woman, her form unnaturally still, almost ethereal against the fading light.
Her silhouette was striking, elegant, yet profoundly disturbing.
Nikos could not make out her features clearly from this distance.
But her hair… it was not hair.
It was a swirling mass of shadowy forms, like dark serpents writhing with an independent, malevolent life.
They pulsed with an almost imperceptible, cold green glow.
Her mere presence seemed to drain the warmth from the air.
A profound, ancient cold seeped into Nikos, a cold that touched his very soul.
Theron let out a guttural cry, a sound of pure anguish and horror.
He moved with astonishing speed for such a massive creature.
His powerful hand clamped onto Nikos’s shoulder, spinning him violently away from the chilling tableau.
“She knows your name,” Theron gasped, his voice raspy with an agony that transcended mere fear.
It was the sound of a guardian’s centuries-long vigil shattering in an instant.
Theron’s Burden: A Legacy of Failure
Theron stumbled, his immense strength suddenly failing him.
He dragged Nikos behind a cluster of rocks, out of sight from the distant, silent figure.
His breath came in ragged, desperate gasps.
“Forgive me, boy,” he whispered, his voice thick with a sorrow that Nikos could not comprehend.
Nikos demanded answers, his own fear battling with a rising tide of confusion and anger.
Theron, his eyes fixed on the path they had just abandoned, began to speak of old times.
He spoke of a time before the age of heroes, when the gods walked more freely among mortals.
He spoke of the Sacred Temple of the Coiled Serpent, hidden deep within these very mountains.
Theron revealed himself to be one of its ancient guardians.
He served the High Priestess, a woman of profound beauty and unparalleled mystic power.
Her name was Medusa.
But not the monster of legends, he insisted, not then.
She was a conduit, a vessel for an ancient, primordial force.
Her power was tied to a bloodline, a lineage that could either bring forth an age of prosperity or unleash an unspeakable darkness.
Nikos’s own ancestors, Theron explained, were part of that sacred lineage.
Theron then spoke of the cataclysm, a betrayal not by the Olympian gods, but by a jealous, forgotten deity.
This god had sought to usurp Medusa's power, twisting it, corrupting her divine essence.
The Priestess, Medusa, was transformed.
Her vibrant hair became a crown of venomous serpents.
Her gaze, once a conduit for healing, became a weapon of petrification.
But not against all, Theron clarified, only those whose hearts harbored malice or who carried the tainted blood of her betrayers.
Theron, as a guardian, had failed.
He had failed to protect Medusa from the ancient curse that bound her.
He had failed to prevent the perversion of her sacred powers.
For centuries, he had roamed these mountains, a self-imposed exile, burdened by guilt.
His sole remaining purpose was to protect the last direct descendant of the sacred lineage – Nikos.
He aimed to shield Nikos from ever encountering Medusa.
He sought to prevent Nikos from becoming either her unwitting pawn or a victim of the very power that transformed her.
The Awakening of the Serpent’s Blood
Nikos listened, his mind reeling.
The weight of centuries, of ancient curses and forgotten gods, suddenly pressed down on him.
He was not just a merchant's son; he was the last echo of a broken prophecy.
He felt a coldness spread from his toes, up through his legs.
