It shimmered across the polished marble and gilded statues of ancient kings.
Students, heirs to realms both grand and small, stood in pristine formation.
They were awaiting the annual Address of Sovereignty from Prince Alexander.
Prince Alexander, heir apparent, cut a striking figure in his ceremonial robes.
His golden hair, usually unruly, was impeccably styled for the occasion.
He projected an air of studied indifference, a mask he wore exceptionally well.
Daniel, a scholarship student from the lesser House of Kaelen, watched from the periphery.
His attire, though respectable, lacked the opulence of his peers.
The Kaelen name was a stain, a whisper of past treason that clung to him like a shroud.
He felt the prickle of judgmental eyes, the silent disdain that followed him everywhere.
But his focus was not on the snobbery of the elite.
His gaze was fixed on the throng near the ceremonial dais.
He scanned the faces, a meticulous habit born of necessity.
Then he saw it.
A new face, an unfamiliar man in the retinue of the Ambassador from Veridian.
The man’s posture was too rigid, his eyes too sharp.
A faint glint caught Daniel’s eye as the man shifted, a metallic sheen beneath a heavy embroidered cuff.
It was a concealed weapon.
His blood ran cold.
Panic, sharp and visceral, seized him, but his training kicked in instantly.
The Serpent's Strike
Time seemed to distort, stretching into an agonizing crawl.
Daniel’s instincts screamed at him to act.
He pushed through the bewildered students with a sudden, forceful urgency.
He reached Prince Alexander, grabbing the startled royal by the arm.
With a brutal shove, Daniel pulled the prince behind a stout stone column.
A collective gasp rippled through the courtyard.
At that exact moment, the unfamiliar man lunged.
A long, obsidian dagger, its hilt intricately carved, arced through the air.
It whistled precisely where Alexander’s head had been moments before.
Security guards, usually impeccable, were a beat too slow, their cries of alarm belated.
Daniel moved with a speed that defied his lanky frame.
He twisted, intercepting the assailant’s arm with a jarring block.
His hand closed around the attacker’s wrist in a vise-like grip.
With a swift, practiced movement, Daniel disarmed the man.
The dagger clattered harmlessly against the marble.
He slammed the assailant against the column, rendering him unconscious with a precise strike.
Chaos erupted.
Screams tore through the academy grounds as students scattered in terror.
The air filled with frantic shouts and the clatter of ceremonial swords being drawn.
Prince Alexander, his face ashen, stumbled out from behind the column.
He stared at Daniel, his eyes wide with a mixture of terror, confusion, and raw disbelief.
"Who… who taught you to fight like that?" he whispered, his voice trembling.
Daniel’s chest heaved with adrenaline, his eyes still scanning the panicked crowd.
He offered no explanation, no comfort, just a hard, unyielding stare.
He saw the security detail finally apprehending the downed assailant.
He knew his silence would only fuel Alexander’s suspicions.
It was a necessary cruelty.
The Weight of a Hidden Badge
Later, the Grand Hall buzzed with whispered speculation and fear.
Daniel had been interrogated, his answers curt and evasive.
He gave only the barest details, enough to confirm his actions, nothing more.
Alexander, however, was not satisfied with official reports.
He cornered Daniel in an empty, dusty classroom in the west wing.
The afternoon light filtered weakly through grimy stained-glass windows.
"You saved my life," Alexander stated, his voice devoid of royal command, raw with personal injury.
"Yet, you wouldn't even look at me this past year."
"You ignored me in lessons, cut me off in debates, and deliberately avoided every social gathering."
"I thought you hated me, Daniel Kaelen."
Daniel turned from the window, his expression unreadable.
"My disdain was a necessary shield," Daniel replied, his voice low and tight.
He slowly, deliberately, reached for the worn silver badge pinned to his academy tunic.
He unfastened it, letting it drop to the grimy wooden floor.
Underneath, subtly integrated into the fabric, was another insignia.
It was a stylized falcon, wings spread, clutching a laurel wreath—the emblem of the Eldorian Royal Guard.
But it was subtly different, lacking the gilded flourish of the modern guard.
This was the symbol of the Old Guard, the elite protectors from generations past.
A forgotten branch, its members often from houses deemed 'unreliable' or 'politically inconvenient.'
His family, House Kaelen, had once held a proud place in its ranks.
Until the 'Betrayal of the Sapphire Coast,' centuries ago.
"I was assigned to protect you," Daniel confessed, his voice devoid of emotion.
A Prince's Misunderstanding
Alexander stepped closer, his initial shock giving way to a deeper, more unsettling realization.
"The Old Guard…" he murmured, his eyes fixed on the archaic emblem.
"My father speaks of them only in hushed, disapproving tones."
