The Glass Cage
The air in the ultra-modern boardroom of Shinwa Group was always thick with a particular kind of tension. It wasn't the hum of the advanced AI servers or the muted chatter from the city below that caused it. It was the presence of Mr. Kim.
His movements were sharp, his voice a polished blade, and his gaze could dissect ambition in an instant. Kim Jae-hyun was a titan, forged in the ruthless fires of corporate warfare. He sat at the head of the table, an undisputed emperor in his glass castle.
Anya Yi-jin, an intern whose presence was as unobtrusive as a shadow, merely observed from her usual seat at the far end. Her uniform was always impeccably pressed, her expression perpetually serene. Most saw her as just another quiet face among the dozens of hopefuls. They were gravely mistaken.
Today, however, the silence was shattered.
"Yi-jin," Mr. Kim's voice cut through the air, devoid of warmth.
Anya's head tilted slightly, acknowledging him.
"You've been... inquisitive lately," he continued, a thinly veiled threat in his tone. "Asking questions about historical projects, old financials. Things beyond an intern's purview."
He paused, letting the weight of his displeasure settle.
"Frankly, you're becoming a nuisance."
Anya's eyes, dark and fathomless, met his without a flicker.
"Shinwa Group values efficiency, Yi-jin," he declared, his voice rising slightly. "And you, I'm afraid, are no longer efficient."
He reached across the gleaming table, a crisp, white envelope held between his manicured fingers. With a dismissive flick, he tossed it towards her. It landed with a soft thud just inches from her hand.
"Pack your things," he stated, the finality chilling. "You are fired."
A collective gasp rippled through the assembled junior executives, but Anya remained perfectly still. A ghost of a smile, almost imperceptible, touched her lips. It wasn't a smile of defeat, but one of profound, terrifying anticipation.
The Seated Serpent
Mr. Kim watched her, expecting tears, protest, anything but this unnerving calm. He’d seen countless careers end this way, always with the satisfying crumple of pride. But Anya merely nodded.
She didn’t reach for the termination letter. Instead, she slowly, deliberately, rose from her seat. Every eye in the room was fixed on her, wondering if she would make a scene or slink away.
She began to walk.
Not towards the exit, but towards the head of the table. Towards Mr. Kim.
A low murmur started, quickly stifled by Mr. Kim’s icy glare. He watched her approach, a flicker of irritation, then confusion, crossing his face. What was this intern playing at?
Anya reached the CEO’s chair, the ornate, plush seat that only he dared occupy. She gently pulled it out. The sound of its casters gliding across the polished floor seemed to echo in the sudden, absolute silence.
Then, with an elegant, almost regal motion, she sat down. She settled into the chair, adjusting its height, making herself utterly at home. It was an act of profound defiance, an unspoken coup.
Mr. Kim's jaw tightened. "What in the devil do you think you're doing, Yi-jin?" he growled, his face a mask of barely controlled fury. "Get out of my seat!"
Anya ignored him. Her hand, steady as a surgeon's, reached into her pocket. She produced a sleek, silver remote control, no bigger than her thumb. It was a device no intern should possess, especially not in a secure boardroom.
Her finger hovered over a single, illuminated button. The tension in the room was now palpable, thick enough to cut with a knife. What was she doing? What could a mere intern possibly do?
The Unveiling
Anya met Mr. Kim's furious stare, her earlier faint smile now a cool, undeniable triumph. "I'm merely fulfilling my contractual obligations, Mr. Kim," she stated, her voice soft but resonating with an authority no one had ever heard from her before.
Then, she pressed the button.
The massive, state-of-the-art projector, which usually displayed quarterly reports and market analyses, flickered to life. The screen behind Mr. Kim, spanning the entire wall, blazed with an official document.
