I still feel the cafeteria floor after my 'friend' moved my chair.

I remember the smell of overcooked broccoli in the school cafeteria.

I was always a little nervous about lunch.

It was always so loud and chaotic.

My best friend, Alex, was usually my anchor.

We had been inseparable since fifth grade.

We shared everything.

But things had felt off lately.

Alex had started hanging out with a new group.

They were the popular, seemingly untouchable kids.

Chloe, Liam, and Sarah.

They had their own inside jokes.

They had their own way of looking at people.

I often felt like an outsider when I was with them.

Alex would sometimes ignore my texts.

Alex would walk past me in the hallway without a word.

Then later, Alex would pretend nothing happened.

"Oh, I didn't see you there," Alex would say with a shrug.

Or, "My phone was dead, sorry."

It stung every single time.

I tried to tell myself it wasn't a big deal.

Friendships change in high school.

Everyone told me that.

But Alex's eyes would sometimes flick to Chloe.

A silent conversation passed between them.

It felt like I was the punchline of an unsaid joke.

One day, Alex made a comment about my thrift store sweater.

"Is that what the cool kids are wearing now?" Alex smirked.

It was meant to be funny.

It didn't feel funny.

I tried to laugh it off.

My throat felt tight with embarrassment.

Chloe and Liam just giggled quietly.

Alex saw my face fall.

"Relax, it's just a joke," Alex said quickly.

But the sting lingered for the rest of the day.

I started to feel a constant knot in my stomach.

I still feel the cafeteria floor after my 'friend' moved my chair.

It was always there when I was around Alex.

I was always waiting for the next subtle put-down.

I was always waiting for the next time I’d be ignored.

I always hoped things would go back to normal.

That Tuesday, I was especially looking forward to lunch.

My morning classes had been tough.

I just wanted a break.

I wanted some normalcy.

I entered the cafeteria, tray in hand.

It was heavier than usual.

I had extra milk and an apple.

I spotted Alex at our usual table.

Chloe and Liam were there too.

They were all laughing loudly.

Alex saw me and gave a quick wave.

It was a small gesture.

It felt like a lifeline in the chaotic room.

I started weaving through the tables.

My worn sneakers squeaked on the tile.

I tried to keep my tray level.

My eyes were on Alex.

I was trying to catch Alex's eye again.

I was almost there.

I saw Alex shift slightly in the seat.

It was a quick, almost imperceptible movement.

Alex’s gaze met mine for a fleeting second.

There was something in Alex's eyes.

Something I couldn't quite place.

A flash of something cold.

I dismissed it immediately.

My mind told me I was overthinking things.

I reached our table.

I began to turn to sit in my usual chair.

My body was already committing to the motion.

I felt the weight shift.

My hands were still gripping the tray.

My eyes were on the food.

I was mentally preparing for my first bite.

Then, there was nothing.

The chair was simply not there.

It was gone.

My legs moved where the chair should have been.

There was only empty air.

My body lurched forward.

My arms flailed wildly.

The tray slipped from my grasp completely.

Time seemed to slow down.

I saw the plastic tray arc through the air.

I saw the red spaghetti sauce separate.

It sailed through the air like droplets of blood.

The mashed potatoes followed.

They looked like a slow-motion avalanche.

My own body twisted awkwardly.

I hit the cold, hard linoleum floor.

A sickening thud echoed loudly.

The tray shattered beside my face.

Milk splattered my hair.

Spaghetti sauce rained down onto my jeans.

It also splattered across my white shirt.

My vision blurred for a second.

The impact knocked the breath out of me.

A sudden, absolute silence fell over the nearest tables.

Then, a gasp rippled through the room.

Followed by a few hushed whispers.

I was lying there, completely exposed.

My new jeans were ruined.

My lunch was a complete mess.

My face was burning.

I looked up through watery eyes.

Alex was standing over me.

Alex's eyes were wide with a feigned shock.
