I still see the cafeteria floor where my lunch tray went flying.

I walked into the noisy middle school cafeteria that Tuesday.

My worn sneakers squeaked on the linoleum.

A knot of popular kids were by the pizza line, laughing too loudly.

I tried to make myself smaller, holding my tray tight.

It had the usual sad-looking spaghetti and a carton of milk.

My friend Maya was supposed to meet me.

She usually saved me a spot at our table by the windows.

But today she was nowhere in sight.

I felt a familiar ripple of dread in my stomach.

The cafeteria always made my palms sweat a little.

I navigated past a cluster of freshmen.

They were elbowing each other and giggling.

My gaze kept sweeping for Maya.

Then I saw her at the big, round table near the back.

She was sitting with Jessica and Chloe.

Jessica, the queen bee of eighth grade, was leaning in conspiratorially.

Maya didn't even look up as I approached.

I hesitated, my heart sinking lower with each step.

The spaghetti felt heavy on my tray.

I knew that table was usually off-limits for me.

Jessica had made that clear last week during art class.

She'd cornered me by the clay sink.

"Some tables are just not for everyone, you know?" she'd said.

I still see the cafeteria floor where my lunch tray went flying.

Her voice was sweet but her eyes were cold.

I just nodded mutely, cleaning brushes extra hard.

My throat felt tight and dry.

I decided to just go to our usual window table alone.

Maybe Maya would see me and come over later.

She'd been acting weird for a few weeks.

Always canceling our plans at the last minute.

Making excuses about homework or a family thing.

But then I'd see her TikToks with Jessica.

They’d be laughing, doing silly dances.

I’d just tell myself she was busy.

I’d tell myself she was still my friend.

I took a deep breath.

I turned slightly, trying to pivot away from Jessica's group.

My back was now mostly to their table.

That's when I felt it.

A sudden, hard bump from behind me.

It wasn't a gentle nudge.

It was a definite shove.

My balance completely failed me.

The heavy plastic tray tilted wildly in my grip.

I watched in slow motion as the spaghetti slid.

It went over the edge, a red-brown waterfall.

The milk carton followed, arcing through the air.

My hands scrabbled uselessly to catch it.

A sickening splash echoed loudly in the buzzing room.

The sound cut through the cafeteria chatter.

My feet slipped on something wet and slick.

I stumbled forward, then dropped to one knee.

The spilled milk created a growing white puddle.

Strands of spaghetti clung to my jeans.

A few globs landed on the polished floor.

The cheesy smell hit me instantly.

Then I looked up, my eyes stinging.

Jessica stood there, just a few feet away.

She had taken a step back.

A smirk played on her lips.

Her friend Chloe giggled into her hand.

"Oh my god," Chloe whispered, but it was loud enough.

Maya sat frozen at their table.

Her face was pale and she wouldn’t meet my gaze.

She looked down at her own plate.

It was all happening so fast.

But the silence felt deafening.

Everyone in the cafeteria seemed to be watching.

The spaghetti sauce slowly dripped down my leg.

My face felt hot.
