The Weight of Tradition
The afternoon sun, usually a welcome guest, felt like an intrusive spotlight in the quiet, stifling living room.
E.g. :I saw my mother destroy my daughter's birthday cake, then she blamed me.

Elara knelt on the cold, polished floor, her back aching, her spirit weary.
Before her sat Anya, Kael’s mother, a woman whose every glance carried the weight of generations and expectations.
The silver basin between them held murky water, infused with dark herbs and what Elara suspected was fine silt from the family’s ancestral lands.
It was another one of Anya’s "cleansing rituals," an escalating series of demands since Kael had been deployed.
Elara’s hands, though calloused from years of farm work, trembled as she gently washed Anya’s feet.
Anya’s eyes, usually sharp and penetrating, were now brimming with tears that spilled freely down her weathered cheeks.
A low, mournful keening escaped her lips, a sound designed to evoke sympathy, guilt, and compliance.
“Not with devotion, child,” Anya whispered, her voice cracking, yet laced with an undeniable steel.
“You wash as if performing a chore, not an act of purification for your husband’s soul.”
Elara bit back a sharp retort; she had learned long ago that arguing only prolonged the torment.
She simply lowered her gaze, focusing on the rhythmic swish of water.
A Shadow in the Hearth
When Kael had left for the distant borders, Anya had promised to look after Elara, to treat her like her own daughter.
Elara, an orphan taken in by Kael’s family, had cherished that promise.
But Kael’s absence had unveiled a different Anya, a woman steeped in ancient superstitions and a profound, possessive control.
The “rituals” began subtly: specific herbs for cooking, prayers at certain times of day, modest dress codes.
Then came the weekly foot washings, each one accompanied by Anya’s increasingly dramatic tears and accusations of Elara’s "spiritual impurity."
The water grew progressively darker, the herbs more pungent, the demands more outlandish.
Elara knew Anya blamed her for Kael’s long deployment, for his choice of a "modern" wife over a more traditional one, for any perceived slight against the family’s ancient lineage.
She believed Anya saw her as a corrupting influence, a stain on Kael’s military honor.
Just yesterday, Anya had insisted Elara clean the ceremonial knives with her bare hands, claiming it would purify her spirit, despite the risk of cuts.
Elara had complied, her resolve hardening with each humiliation.
The Cleansing Draught
Today, the foot-washing was meant to culminate in the “cleansing draught.”
Anya had explained, with chilling calm, that Elara must drink the water after the washing, to fully absorb the purification.
Elara’s stomach churned at the thought of the muddy, herbal liquid.
It felt less like a ritual and more like a punishment, a calculated act of degradation.
Anya’s tears continued, but her grip on Elara’s wrist, surprisingly strong, tightened.
“You bring shame to this house, child,” Anya wailed, her voice rising slightly.
“Your spirit is tainted, your love for Kael impure.”
Elara clenched her jaw, refusing to meet Anya’s gaze.
She tried to discreetly shift away, hoping to avoid the inevitable.
Suddenly, a loud thud echoed from the front of the house, followed by the squeak of the ancient door hinges.
Both women froze, their eyes darting towards the sound.
An Unexpected Return
Standing in the doorway, framed by the bright afternoon light, was Kael.
His uniform was travel-worn, his face gaunt, but his presence filled the room with a sudden, jarring reality.
A heavy duffel bag lay at his feet; he must have just arrived, unannounced.
His eyes, usually warm and welcoming, were wide with confusion, then a dawning horror.
He saw Elara on her knees, her face pale, her hands immersed in the murky basin.
He saw his mother, tear-streaked and seemingly distraught, holding Elara’s wrist.
His initial thought was that Elara was comforting his mother, performing a dutiful act of solace.
He had always known Anya was prone to dramatic displays, especially when missing him.
But then, Anya’s grip on Elara’s wrist tightened further.
Her eyes, still wet with theatrical tears, locked onto Kael’s, a flicker of triumph visible deep within them.
She saw her opportunity, a chance to solidify her narrative of Elara’s disrespect.
The Breaking Point
With a dramatic gasp, Anya suddenly slumped forward, her wails intensifying into a heart-wrenching sob.
“Oh, my son, you have returned to witness your wife’s insolence!” she cried, her voice cracking with feigned anguish.
“She refuses the cleansing, she defies the ancient ways, she brings ruin upon our house!”
