The Dusk Shift at Sector Four
The loading bay behind the Sector Four municipal marketplace always hummed with a low, miserable energy at dusk.

Vendors were packing up their rotting produce, tossing bruised tomatoes into rusted iron dumpsters, and cashing out their daily registers.
It was a gray, concrete canyon where nobody lingered longer than necessary.
Marcus knew this better than anyone else.
He ran Stall 44, the largest organic-certified poultry and root vegetable distributor in the western wing of the complex.
Marcus was a man built out of bad posture, nicotine habits, and absolute authority over his section of the floor.
He wore a grease-stained canvas apron that hadn't seen a washing machine since the municipal election three years prior.
For months, the local inspectors had been sniffing around the northern perimeter of the market.
Rumors of tainted grain shipments and falsified health certificates had been circulating through the night watchman logs.
Marcus wasn't worried about the health inspectors because he owned them.
He paid his protection fees in neat envelopes slipped across sticky diner booths every Tuesday morning.
The Unexpected Visitor
A scruffy ginger street cat padded softly out from behind a stack of wooden crates near the municipal incinerator chute.
The animal was notoriously friendly, known to every truck driver and late-shift cleaner for begging scraps of dried fish.
It trotted directly toward Marcus’s open loading bay with its tail held high in a pathetic display of trust.
This cat wasn't just looking for food tonight.
Clutched loosely in the animal's jaws was a soggy, chewed-up corner of a municipal ledger book.
It was a page containing original signatures, bank routing numbers, and bribe allocations that matched Marcus’s exact handwriting.
The cat dropped the damp paper right onto the edge of Marcus’s stainless steel sorting table.
Marcus froze, his hand hovering over a crate of unwashed carrots as his eyes locked onto the incriminating document.
His face turned the color of curdled milk as he realized the stray had been digging through the municipal archive dumpster behind City Hall.
Panic flickered in his small, dark eyes before a cold, calculated rage took over his entire posture.
The Cruel Decision
Marcus didn't hesitate for a single second.
He reached down and grabbed a heavy plastic bucket filled with boiling, chemical-laced industrial cleaning water leftover from sanitizing the grease traps.
The liquid was steaming, gray with caustic detergents, and hot enough to strip paint off a rusted bumper.
He didn't shout a warning or try to coax the animal away from the table with a piece of scrap meat.
Instead, he hoisted the bucket high above his head with both thick, calloused arms.
"You don't belong in my ledger, you little rat," Marcus muttered under his breath, his voice flat and devoid of any human empathy.
He tipped the bucket forward and poured the scalding, chemical-laced water directly over the resting animal.
The impact was instantaneous and utterly devastating.
The cat's fur blistered and sizzled the moment the boiling caustic liquid made contact with its skin.
