A Mother's Intuition
The city lights blurred outside Anya’s apartment window, softened by the late-night rain.

Elara, Anya’s mother, carefully carried a steaming bowl of her homemade chicken noodle soup into the dimly lit bedroom.
“Just a little more, darling,” Elara murmured, her voice a gentle balm in the quiet room.
Anya, seven months pregnant, lay propped against a mound of pillows, her face a pale canvas of exhaustion and fear.
She managed a weak, almost imperceptible nod, her eyes darting nervously towards the closed bedroom door.
Elara sat on the edge of the bed, spoon-feeding her daughter, her heart aching at the sight of Anya’s gauntness.
Her daughter had always been so vibrant, but this pregnancy had drained her in a way Elara couldn’t explain.
Suddenly, as Elara adjusted the heavy blanket around Anya’s legs, the corner slipped away.
The Unspeakable Discovery
Elara’s breath caught in her throat, a gasp frozen on her lips.
Beneath the thin fabric of Anya’s nightgown, stark against her pale skin, were sprawling, dark purple bruises.
They snaked up Anya’s legs, mottled and angry, undeniable marks of violence.
The spoon clattered from Elara’s trembling hand, striking the ceramic bowl with a sharp, sickening crack.
Her eyes widened in horror, searing into the grotesque patterns on Anya’s skin.
A low, guttural scream ripped from Elara’s chest, a sound born of pure, primal terror.
She staggered backward, clutching her mouth with a hand that felt suddenly alien and cold.
Tears sprang instantly to her eyes, blurring the horrifying image, yet etching it deeper into her memory.
Elara couldn’t accept what she was seeing, couldn’t reconcile it with her daughter, her family, her world.
Her legs gave way, and she knelt by the bedside, her body trembling uncontrollably, her breathing rapid and shallow.
She reached out a trembling hand, hovering inches above the discolored skin, terrified to touch the evidence of such pain.
Her mind screamed with questions, a cacophony of fear and denial.
A Daughter's Silence
Elara completely broke down then, her composure shattered beyond repair.
She gripped Anya’s shoulders, her fingers digging in, desperate for a physical anchor to this spiraling nightmare.
“Who did this to you?” Elara cried hysterically, her voice raw with anguish.
“Tell me! Who did this to my daughter?!” she sobbed, shaking Anya gently, pleading for an answer.
Anya clutched the blanket tightly, desperately pulling it up to conceal the bruises, her own body wracked with tremors.
Tears streamed down her face, mirroring her mother’s, but she remained utterly silent, shaking her head mutely.
Her cries were heart-wrenching, choked and fractured, unable to form words.
She seemed trapped in a cage of terror, unable to escape, unable to speak her truth.
Elara’s grief intensified, twisting into a furious, protective rage.
She tried to pull the blanket down again, to examine the full extent of the horror, but Anya resisted with surprising strength.
Anya’s eyes, usually so loving and open, were now veiled with an impenetrable fear.
It was a fear that held a secret, a heavy, suffocating weight.
The Husband's Return
Just then, the front door creaked open downstairs, a sound that always signaled Mark’s return.
Anya’s husband, Mark, walked into the bedroom, briefcase in hand, a gentle smile already forming on his lips.
He froze, his eyes sweeping across the scene: Elara kneeling, sobbing, Anya trembling, the undone blankets.
His smile vanished, replaced by a look that was hard to decipher – part surprise, part weary resignation.
Elara slowly turned to him, her face a mask of primal grief, which instantly curdled into uncontrollable rage.
Her eyes, red-rimmed and fierce, bored into his.
The warmth that had once been between them evaporated, replaced by an icy, accusatory glare.
Mark’s gaze flickered to Anya, then back to Elara, a calculated stillness settling over him.
He was always so composed, so in control, even in chaos.
An Unspoken Agreement
Elara let out a heart-wrenching scream, a guttural sound that tore through the quiet night.
She lunged forward, grabbing the lapels of his expensive suit, shaking him violently.
“What did you do to her?!” she shrieked, tears blurring her vision as she sobbed uncontrollably.
Mark didn’t flinch from her grasp, didn’t immediately deny.
Instead, his eyes, usually so kind, hardened with a cold, protective glint.
He gently but firmly detached her hands from his suit, his touch unnervingly calm.
“Elara, you need to calm down,” he said, his voice low and even, a sharp contrast to her hysteria.
“You don’t understand what’s happening here.”
He walked over to Anya, who was now barely visible under the mound of blankets, still trembling.
He sat on the bed beside her, taking her small hand in his, stroking it gently.
Anya flinched at his touch, then visibly relaxed, leaning into him slightly.
A chilling silence fell, broken only by the rhythmic patter of rain outside and Elara’s ragged breathing.
The Truth Beneath the Surface
“Anya has been… struggling,” Mark began, his voice softer now, almost coaxing.
“The pregnancy has been incredibly difficult, Elara. More than she lets on.”
He glanced at Anya, whose eyes remained fixed on the blanket, but her grip on his hand tightened.
“She’s under immense pressure, and sometimes… sometimes she lashes out at herself.”
