Beneath them, amidst the rustle of silk and the murmurs of polite society, Julian moved through the masquerade, a phantom in his own life.
Ten years.
Ten years since the world had declared Arthur, Duke of Valois, dead in exile, his name erased from court rolls, his estates absorbed by the ambitious Regent, Armand.
Julian had worn his grief like a second skin, a silent protest against a fate he’d never accepted.
Tonight, however, was meant to be different.
A new consort for the ailing King, a strategic alliance, another step in Regent Armand’s ruthless consolidation of power.
Julian, a mere marquis now, diminished but still noble, was expected to attend, to smile, to pretend.
He found himself drawn to the edge of the ballroom, watching the dancers, each face a blur behind their elaborate masks.
Then, a hand touched his arm.
A touch that ignited a forgotten spark, a familiar current that jolted him to his core.
He turned, finding himself looking into the masked eyes of a man with an undeniable, heart-stopping familiarity.
The man’s black domino mask, edged in silver filigree, couldn't hide the curve of a smile Julian knew intimately.
A waltz began, slow and melancholic, sweeping them onto the polished floor.
It was a dance of ghosts, of memories, of what-ifs.
Julian’s heart pounded, a frantic drum against his ribs.
He knew this man.
He knew him.
The Unmasking
Mid-spin, the man dipped Julian, pulling him close, his voice a low, resonant murmur against Julian’s ear.
"Have you truly forgotten me, my love?"
The words, the tone, shattered Julian’s carefully constructed composure.
He pulled back, his breath catching, fear and a desperate, impossible hope warring within him.
The man reached up, his gloved fingers moving to the ties of his mask.
Julian’s eyes widened, a silent plea for him to stop, for this illusion to remain.
But it was too late.
The mask fell, revealing a face Julian had mourned for a decade.
Arthur.
Arthur, Duke of Valois, alive.
His silver eyes, once full of youthful fire, now held a haunted, resolute intensity.
The sharp line of his jaw, a scar Julian hadn’t noticed before above his left brow, the dark, rich waves of his hair—all were Arthur, yet subtly changed, hardened by time and unseen trials.
"Arthur," Julian whispered, the name a fragile prayer.
Tears pricked his eyes, blurring the opulent ballroom, reducing it to a mere backdrop for this impossible reunion.
"I mourned you for ten years," he choked out, the weight of a decade of grief pressing down on him.
Arthur's thumb stroked the back of Julian's hand, a tender gesture that felt both impossibly real and tragically fleeting.
"Then let me give you the truth," Arthur replied, his voice firm, unwavering.
His eyes, however, flickered, not to Julian, but past him, towards the grand entrance.
A cold dread snaked its way into Julian's chest.
He didn't have time to process Arthur’s words, to even begin to ask the deluge of questions that stormed his mind.
A sudden, sharp clang of steel, the muffled shouts of guards, tore through the music.
The Regent's Shadow
The gilded doors to the Grand Salon burst open with a force that rattled the very crystal chandeliers.
Royal guards, armed with gleaming pikes and swords, flooded into the ballroom.
Their uniforms, emblazoned with the royal crest, were unmistakable, but their movements were precise, ruthless, like hunters cornering their prey.
Panic rippled through the gathered nobility.
Whispers turned to gasps, waltzes dissolved into chaos.
Julian instinctively tightened his grip on Arthur’s hand, a futile gesture of protection.
He understood then.
This wasn't a coincidence.
Arthur’s return was no secret to everyone.
Someone had known.
Someone had revealed him.
Arthur, though, stood tall, his grip on Julian’s hand firm, his expression now a mask of defiant resolve.
"Armand," Arthur stated, his voice carrying over the growing din, his eyes fixed on a figure emerging from behind the ranks of guards.
Regent Armand, a man of imposing stature and calculating eyes, stepped forward.
A cruel smile played on his lips, a chilling testament to his victory.
"My dear cousin," Armand purred, his voice dripping with false cordiality, "a most unexpected, yet utterly predictable, return."
"Did you truly think your pathetic charade of exile would fool me forever?"
Arthur scoffed, a flicker of cold anger in his eyes.
"It wasn't a charade, Armand. It was a strategy. While you consolidated power through lies and assassinations, I was gathering the proof."
A Decade of Deceit
Julian felt dizzy, the world tilting around him.
Assassinations?
Proof?
What was Arthur speaking of?
Regent Armand had always presented himself as the King’s most loyal advisor, stepping in to rule only when the King’s mysterious illness had rendered him incapable.
He had painted Arthur as a traitor, exiled for plotting against the crown, his eventual "death" in a foreign land attributed to the harsh realities of a life without royal favor.
"Proof?" Armand laughed, a hollow, mirthless sound that echoed ominously through the room.
"The only proof here, cousin, is of your treason. Impersonating a dead Duke. Inciting panic. A fitting end to a pitiful life."
Arthur ignored him, his gaze sweeping over the shocked faces of the courtiers, many of whom had been his friends, his allies, before Armand’s rise.
"Ten years ago," Arthur began, his voice clear and strong, cutting through the murmuring crowd, "I discovered Regent Armand’s plot."
Julian’s eyes locked onto Arthur, his mind racing, trying to connect the pieces of this unbelievable puzzle.
"He sought to destabilize the court, to poison the King, to seize the throne for himself under the guise of regency."
A wave of shocked gasps swept through the ballroom.
