It was the heavy quiet of secrets, of ambitions barely contained, and of a succession abruptly altered.
Prince Alaric, barely twenty, lay upon a bier draped in velvet and gold, his face serene in death.
Or so everyone believed.
His untimely demise, attributed to a sudden, virulent fever, had plunged the kingdom into mourning.
Yet, beneath the veneer of sorrow, currents of power shifted, opportunities glimmered, and whispers coiled.
Lord Valerius, Alaric’s uncle and the late King’s younger brother, stood nearest to the deceased.
His face was a mask of profound sorrow, tears tracing paths down his weathered cheeks.
His eyes, however, held a glint that spoke less of heartbreak and more of a victory barely contained.
He was regent now, until the next heir, his own young son, came of age, effectively holding the kingdom's reins.
This was the future he had meticulously, ruthlessly, engineered.
A Legacy of Deceit
The physicians had been so precise, their pronouncements so absolute.
A sudden collapse, a rapid decline, then a final, quiet cessation of breath.
The Royal Physician, Master Elara, a woman of formidable reputation, had confirmed the death.
Her word was sacrosanct, beyond reproach, yet a tremor of unease had run through certain quarters.
Alaric had always been robust, vibrant, too full of life to simply succumb.
But the official decree had been made, and the funeral rites had been hurried, a decision pushed by Valerius himself.
He claimed it was to spare the ailing King, Alaric’s father, further torment.
The King, confined to his chambers, frail and heart-broken, had not objected.
Queen Seraphina, Alaric’s mother, was inconsolable, her grief a raw, public spectacle.
She sat veiled, her body wracked with silent sobs, oblivious to the political machinations swirling around her.
The hall was filled with nobles, courtiers, and dignitaries, all playing their parts in this grim tableau.
Candles flickered, casting long, dancing shadows that seemed to writhe with hidden intentions.
The soft strains of a funeral dirge, played by the Royal Orchestra, filled the vast space with melancholy.
But Valerius heard only the triumphant crescendo of his own ascendancy.
The Final Farewell
It was time for the personal farewells, a tradition for the closest family.
Queen Seraphina was gently guided forward, her body trembling as she reached out to touch her son’s cold hand.
Her whispered goodbyes were drowned in her own tears.
Then, with a practiced sigh, Valerius stepped forward, taking center stage.
He knelt beside the bier, his head bowed, his broad shoulders shaking with what appeared to be profound grief.
He reached out, his hand hovering over Alaric’s chest, a gesture of paternal affection.
"My dear nephew," he murmured, his voice thick with feigned emotion.
"May you find peace in the embrace of the ancestors."
His fingers, subtly, almost imperceptibly, brushed against the silken tunic covering Alaric’s heart.
He felt nothing, as expected.
The poison, a rare, slow-acting compound, was supposed to leave no trace, mimicking natural death.
His plan had been flawless, his execution meticulous.
He was about to rise, his moment of final, public adieu complete, when it happened.
An Impossible Tremor
A tiny, almost imperceptible tremor, a faint vibration, passed through Alaric’s chest.
Valerius’s hand, still resting lightly, froze.
He dismissed it instantly, a trick of his own nerves, a residual tension from weeks of clandestine plotting.
He had been under immense stress, naturally.
He tried to retract his hand, to complete the motion, to move on.
But then, it happened again.
A definite, undeniable twitch, a subtle spasm beneath his fingertips.
Valerius gasped, a choked sound lost in the dirge’s mournful swell.
His eyes, which had moments before held triumph, now widened in unadulterated horror.
His face, once a picture of solemn grief, contorted into a mask of pure, primal fear.
He snatched his hand back as if burned, staggering backward, knocking over a pedestal of lilies.
The white blossoms scattered across the marble floor like fallen stars.
He pointed a trembling finger at the bier, his mouth agape, unable to form a coherent sound.
A choked, gurgling sound escaped his throat, a raw, terrified noise.
The dirge faltered, the musicians exchanging bewildered glances.
A ripple of unease spread through the front rows of mourners.
The Awakening
Then, in a slow, agonizing crawl, Alaric’s eyelids fluttered.
The entire hall seemed to hold its breath, a collective gasp echoing through the stone arches.
A flicker of light, a spark of awareness, ignited in his once-vacant eyes.
They snapped open, wide and disoriented, searching the opulent canopy above him.
A shallow, rasping gasp for air, followed by another, stronger, broke the deathly silence.
He pushed himself up, slowly, stiffly, his body protesting against the sudden movement.
His head lolled to one side, then straightened, his gaze sweeping across the terrified faces surrounding him.
"What... what happened?" he rasped, his voice hoarse, barely a whisper.
It was not a ghost.
It was Alaric.
Panic, raw and unbridled, erupted through the Grand Hall.
Screams pierced the air.
Courtiers stumbled backward, tripping over their elaborate robes.
Some collapsed into gilded chairs, their faces ashen.
A candelabra, heavy with burning tapers, toppled, sending hot wax splattering and flames licking at the velvet drapes.
Guards drew their swords, unsure whether to protect the living or subdue the… awakened.
Queen Seraphina let out a piercing shriek, her veil falling away to reveal a face of terror and disbelieving hope.
The dirge dissolved into discordant chaos, the musicians abandoning their instruments in fright.
Valerius, his face a ghastly shade of green, simply stared, his carefully constructed world crumbling around him.
