A Kingdom's Burden
The sun, a benevolent golden orb, cast long, opulent shadows across the grand Royal Palace Square.
E.g. :I caught my husband with my best friend in our living room, and my entire life ended.
It was a day of customary splendor in the kingdom of Eldoria.
Towering spires, crowned with gleaming gold, pierced the cerulean sky.
White marble steps, polished to a reflective sheen, ascended to the palace's colossal entrance.
Fountains danced with crystalline water, intricate gardens bloomed in vibrant hues, and statues of ancient heroes stood silent vigil.
Royal banners, emblazoned with the proud lion insignia of House Theron, snapped crisply in the gentle breeze.
Hundreds of nobles, their silks shimmering, mingled with commoners, all gathered to witness the majestic royal procession.
At the heart of it all was King Theron, a figure of dignified middle age, his presence commanding, his rule seemingly unshakeable.
He was adorned in a magnificent royal robe, its rich velvets and intricate embroidery speaking of centuries of power and tradition.
Yet, beneath the outward display of opulence, Eldoria suffered.
A silent, insidious blight, known only as "The Withering," had begun to creep across the lands.
Crops failed, livestock sickened, and the laughter that once echoed through villages grew faint.
The King bore this secret burden, a growing dread that gnawed at his waking thoughts and invaded his restless dreams.
He had consulted his wisest scholars, his most powerful mages, and his most devout priests.
None had offered a true solution, only grim predictions and empty rituals.
But King Theron had also delved into forbidden texts, into ancient prophecies whispered only in the deepest catacombs of the royal library.
One such prophecy spoke of "The Seeker King" and "The Whisperer of Roots."
It foretold a desperate convergence, a moment of profound humility, which alone could mend the broken pact between the land and its people.
The King had dismissed it as myth, a desperate hope from a bygone era, until the signs of The Withering became undeniable.
Now, as his mighty warhorse slowly advanced, its hooves echoing a steady, powerful rhythm on the marble, Theron's mind was a tempest of fear and a sliver of desperate hope.
The Unseen Obstacle
The procession was a symphony of perfectly synchronized movements.
Royal knights, astride tall, impeccably groomed warhorses, formed an intimidating vanguard, their polished armor glinting.
The crowd murmured with admiration, their eyes fixed on the approaching King.
Then, a subtle disruption broke the perfect rhythm.
Standing directly in the King's path, seemingly oblivious to the grandeur and power bearing down upon him, was an old man.
He was a stark, almost jarring contrast to the royal splendor.
His clothes were mere rags, tattered and grimy, clinging to a frail frame.
His long white hair was a wild, disheveled tangle, framing a face etched with the deep lines of countless seasons and hardships.
He clutched a gnarled, worn-out wooden cane, using it as a prop more than a support.
He stood perfectly still, his gaze strangely calm, fixed on the approaching monarch.
Two royal guards, tall and formidable, their expressions stern with duty, immediately noticed the trespasser.
They exchanged a quick, disdainful glance.
"Back off! Back off now!" one soldier bellowed, his voice sharp and authoritative.
He held his spear horizontally across the old man's chest, a clear, unmistakable command.
"The King is here! Do not impede the royal procession!" the other guard added, his tone equally arrogant.
The first soldier, without waiting for a response, roughly shoved the old man aside.
The old man stumbled, his worn cane slipping on the polished marble.
For a terrifying moment, it seemed he would fall, but he miraculously regained his footing.
He did not resist, did not cry out, did not even flinch.
His gaze remained fixed, strangely unwavering, on the King who was now just meters away.
The surrounding people gasped, their initial curiosity curdling into shock and pity.
Whispers rippled through the crowd.
"He'll be thrown in the dungeon!" a woman gasped.
"Poor old soul, doesn't know his place," a man muttered, shaking his head.
Everyone assumed the old man was about to be forcibly removed, perhaps even arrested, for his audacity.
The King's Unthinkable Act
King Theron, from atop his majestic warhorse, had witnessed the entire exchange.
His heart pounded, not from anger at the old man's obstruction, but from a sudden, profound jolt of recognition.
His eyes, narrowed in the harsh sunlight, scanned the old man's face, his posture, his unyielding calm.
He saw the lines on his face, lines that seemed to mirror the ancient symbols in the forbidden texts.
He remembered the descriptions of "The Whisperer of Roots" – one who carried the scars of the land, one whose stillness commanded attention, one who would appear when the land cried out.
A chill ran down his spine, a mix of terror and exhilarating hope.
The prophecy was not just a myth; it was unfolding before him.
His guards, oblivious to the King's internal struggle, continued to try and hustle the old man away.
"Your Majesty, we will clear the path," one guard declared, pulling his spear back to strike.
"STOP!" King Theron's voice, usually a measured baritone, boomed with an uncharacteristic urgency.
The command echoed across the square, silencing the guards and the murmuring crowd instantly.
