An Ordinary Evening Shattered

The quiet hum of the television filled the comfortable living room.

E.g. :My wedding day crash exposed my fiancé's secret family and shattered everything.

Helen, her silver hair catching the soft lamplight, leaned back into the worn armchair.

Beside her, Lucy, her daughter, scrolled idly through her own phone, occasionally chuckling at a meme.

It was an ordinary Tuesday evening, a familiar rhythm of domestic peace.

Helen cherished these moments with Lucy, now twenty-nine and still her anchor.

The Impossible Call

Then, a sudden, jarring vibration buzzed on the coffee table.

Helen glanced down; her phone screen glowed with an incoming call.

"LUCY — HOME" blared across the display.

Helen’s brow furrowed in mild confusion.

She looked from the phone to her daughter.

“That’s you,” Helen stated, a slight question in her voice.

Lucy, oblivious a moment before, looked up, her green eyes widening.

She pointed to herself.

“Me? But I’m right here, Mom.”

A wave of unease washed over Helen, faint but undeniable.

Her finger hovered over the answer button, a strange reluctance gripping her.

It rang again, insistent.

She pressed “Accept Call.”

A Whispered Secret From The Past

She lifted the phone to her ear, a faint click audible.

Silence stretched for a heartbeat, then a breathy, distorted whisper crackled through the line.

It was Lucy’s voice, unmistakably, yet younger, tinged with a raw urgency that Helen hadn't heard in years.

“Mom… please… don’t let them find it.”

Helen’s hand tightened around the phone.

The whisper continued, now a panicked gasp.

“The journal… the one in the attic… I hid it for safety…”

Helen’s gaze snapped back to Lucy, who was now staring at her with profound bewilderment.

Lucy’s lips parted, a silent question forming.

The air in the room grew heavy, thick with an unspoken dread.

Lucy's Bewildered Denial

Helen slowly lowered the phone, her heart pounding against her ribs.

“Lucy,” she began, her voice barely a tremor.

“What was that?” Lucy whispered, her eyes wide with genuine alarm.

“She… the voice… it mentioned a journal, in the attic,” Helen managed to articulate.

Lucy shook her head immediately, a swift, emphatic gesture.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about, Mom.”

“I’ve never had a journal that I hid in the attic,” she insisted, her voice gaining strength, trying to reason with an unfolding nightmare.

“And I certainly haven’t been upstairs tonight.”

Helen looked toward the dark, inviting staircase that led to the upper floor, to the attic access.

A cold shiver traced its way down her spine.

The Old Phone's Revelation

Just then, a faint, insistent ping chimed from Helen’s phone.

She looked down again, her fingers trembling slightly.

Another notification had appeared, layered over the active call screen.

It read: “CALLER UNKNOWN — CALL WAITING.”

But directly beneath the current caller's name, something else was visible.

The small print read: “LUCY — HOME (OLD PHONE).”

Helen’s breath hitched in her throat.

Lucy’s old phone.

The one she’d lost years ago, a cheap, clunky model from her early teens.

The one they’d assumed was gone forever, perhaps recycled, certainly inactive.

How could it be calling?

And what did it mean by a journal, hidden for safety?

A Mother's Fragmented Memory

Helen remembered the summer Lucy had turned fourteen.

She’d been particularly quiet that year, withdrawn, sketching constantly in a small, locked diary she carried everywhere.

Lucy had always been artistic, but this was different, more secretive.

One day, the diary, and her old phone, had simply vanished.
