The balloons were bright blue and silver, bouncing against the ceiling of our living room. It was Liam's fifth birthday, a milestone I'd been planning for months. His face lit up like a Christmas tree as he ripped into his presents. Every laugh, every joyful shriek, was a melody to my heart. My husband, Mark, was playing the doting dad, his arm casually around my waist. My mother, Sarah, was there too, helping serve cake and chatting with the other parents. It was a perfect scene, a snapshot of pure, unadulterated happiness. I felt so incredibly lucky, surrounded by the people I loved most in the world.
Then, I needed more plates from the kitchen. I slipped away from the bustling crowd, my smile still plastered on my face. The kitchen was quieter, a brief reprieve from the chaos. I was reaching into the cupboard above the sink when I heard muffled voices from the pantry. It was a small space, mostly for dry goods and extra party supplies. I figured Mark was helping Mom find something, maybe a forgotten bag of chips. I paused, about to call out, to let them know I was there. But then, a soft, unfamiliar sound reached my ears. It was too intimate, too hushed to be just a conversation about snacks. My breath hitched in my throat, a cold knot forming in my stomach. A primal instinct, sharp and terrifying, seized me. I slowly, silently, moved towards the pantry door. My hand trembled as it touched the cool wood. I pushed it open just a crack, barely enough to peek through.
