My world was supposed to be perfect.

It was just weeks away from the most magical day of my life.

I had the dream dress, the dream venue, and the man I thought was my soulmate.

My best friend, Sarah, was my maid of honor, my rock, my sister.

We’d known each other since kindergarten, through scraped knees and first heartbreaks.

She was family, closer than any blood relative.

Mark, my fiancé, was everything I ever wanted in a partner.

He was kind, funny, ambitious, and loved me fiercely.

Or so I believed with every fiber of my being.

We’d bought a beautiful lake house together last year.

It was our sanctuary, our future, filled with so many cherished memories already.

The wedding planning had been stressful, but mostly exhilarating.

I was finishing up some last-minute details at our main house in the city.

Mark had gone up to the lake house a few days earlier to prep it for a small pre-wedding gathering.

He said Sarah was going up to help him with some decorations.

I thought nothing of it; they were both my favorite people in the world.

Caught my best friend and fiancé in our bed, days before the wedding.

I decided to surprise them that Thursday evening.

I packed a small overnight bag, excited to join them early.

The drive was longer than usual, filled with a nervous flutter of anticipation.

I pictured Mark’s delighted face, Sarah’s warm hug.

The sun was setting as I pulled into the driveway, casting long, purple shadows.

The front door was slightly ajar, which struck me as odd.

They were usually so careful about locking up.

I pushed it open slowly, calling out their names, a smile on my face.

Silence.

The air inside felt heavy, strangely still.

I walked further into the house, my footsteps echoing on the wooden floors.

The living room was empty, the kitchen was clean.

Then I heard it.

A low murmur, hushed voices, coming from our master bedroom.

My heart gave a strange lurch, a sudden, cold premonition.

“Mark?” I called out again, my voice a little shakier this time.

No answer, but the murmuring stopped abruptly.

A primal fear began to coil in my stomach.

I walked towards the bedroom, each step feeling like I was wading through treacle.

The door was not fully closed.

I reached out a trembling hand and pushed it open wider.

The sight that greeted me froze the very air in my lungs.

It was them.

On our bed.

Naked.

Entwined.

Sarah, my best friend, and Mark, my fiancé.

My breath caught in my throat, a silent, guttural gasp.

Their heads snapped up, eyes wide with terror, not surprise.

The world tilted on its axis, spinning into a horrifying blur.

Mark’s face, usually so open and loving, was contorted with shock and immediate shame.
