My wedding day was supposed to be perfect.
I had dreamed about this day since I was a little girl.
The venue was breathtaking, filled with flowers and fairy lights, everything I ever wanted.
Mark, my fiancé, stood at the altar, looking so handsome in his suit, his eyes full of love, or so I thought.
Our guests, all our closest friends and family, beamed with happiness for us.
The ceremony itself felt like a dream, a whirlwind of vows and tender kisses.
Then came the reception, a joyous blur of dancing, laughter, and heartfelt speeches.
But the moment everyone truly waited for was the cutting of the cake.
It was a magnificent five-tier creation, frosted in ivory and adorned with delicate sugar flowers.
It represented our sweet future, a symbol of everything we were building together.
Mark and I stood before it, holding the silver cake knife together, smiling for the cameras.
The room was buzzing with anticipation, everyone ready to cheer as we made the first cut.
I remember the flash of a camera, the warm feeling of Mark’s hand over mine.
We began to press the knife into the bottom tier, giggling softly.
Suddenly, there was a sickening groan, a deep, ominous creak from the cake stand itself.
A hush fell over the room, an almost palpable silence replacing the earlier joyous chatter.
My smile faltered, a knot forming in the pit of my stomach.
Mark's grip on my hand tightened, his eyes darting to the cake with a flash of panic.
Before anyone could react, the entire upper section of the elaborate cake began to lean precariously.
Time seemed to slow down, every second stretching into an eternity.
With a horrifying, drawn-out smash, the three top tiers toppled over, collapsing onto the table.
Cream and sugar flowers exploded outwards, splattering across the pristine white tablecloth.
A collective gasp echoed through the ballroom, followed by stunned silence.
My jaw dropped, my heart pounding a frantic rhythm against my ribs.
Initially, I just stared at the messy wreckage, my perfect cake now a sweet, shattered disaster.
Then I saw it.
Nestled amidst the ruined frosting, half-covered by a fallen sugar rose, was a small, ornate wooden box.
It was clearly not part of the cake’s design, far too out of place to be accidental.
My gaze flickered to Mark, who had gone utterly pale, his eyes wide with unmasked terror.
He reached out, as if to snatch the box, but his hand froze mid-air, trembling.
Curiosity, mixed with a chilling dread, compelled me forward.
I reached down, my fingers sticky with frosting, and carefully pulled the box free.
It was a dark, polished wood, intricately carved with initials I didn't recognize: 'M.D. + S.L.'
A wave of nausea washed over me, cold dread creeping up my spine.
Mark’s initials were M.S.
Who was S.L.?
My mind raced, desperately trying to make sense of this impossible object.
Then, I noticed something else, a tiny, almost imperceptible inscription on the side.
It was a date: 'August 12th, 2023.'
That date was only three months ago.
And it was two months after Mark and I got engaged.
My blood ran cold, every joyous memory of our engagement feeling like a cruel mockery.
Mark finally moved, stepping closer, his voice a desperate whisper, "Mia, don't. Please."
