He proposed last night, but I found his other engagement ring…for my mother.

My world was perfect just twenty-four hours ago.

I was on top of the moon, bathed in the glow of endless possibilities.

Michael, the man I adored, had gotten down on one knee at our favorite spot by the lake, surrounded by twinkling fairy lights he’d secretly strung.

His eyes, usually so playful, were serious and brimming with love as he asked me to be his wife.

I said yes, of course, tears streaming down my face, feeling like the luckiest woman alive.

We celebrated with champagne and whispered dreams of our future together, a future I’d planned out in my head a thousand times.

He was everything I ever wanted: kind, funny, ambitious, and he genuinely adored my family, especially my mom.

My mother, Sarah, had been a widow for ten years, and Michael had always been incredibly thoughtful towards her, helping with groceries or fixing things around her house.

I used to joke that she loved him more than me, a lighthearted jab at their sweet, easy connection.

Little did I know, that connection ran far deeper and far darker than I could ever have imagined.

This morning, I woke up still buzzing from the proposal, my new diamond ring sparkling on my left hand in the soft morning light.

Michael had left early for a client meeting, rushing out before I’d even properly stirred.

I noticed his favorite navy blazer, the one he wore last night, draped over our armchair, something he rarely did.

Being the tidy person I am, I went to hang it up for him, a small act of love.

He proposed last night, but I found his other engagement ring…for my mother.

As I lifted it, something heavy shifted in the inside breast pocket.

My curiosity piqued, I reached in, assuming it was his wallet or phone.

Instead, my fingers closed around a small, velvet-covered box.

My heart fluttered, thinking maybe he had another small surprise for me, perhaps a delicate necklace or earrings.

A soft smile played on my lips as I pulled it out, feeling the familiar texture of a ring box.

But this box was different; it was a slightly darker shade of blue, and the shape felt…off.

My smile faltered as I slowly, tentatively, flipped open the lid.

Inside, nestled on a cream satin cushion, was another engagement ring.

It wasn't my ring, the one he'd just given me, but it was undeniably an engagement ring.

The diamond was a solitaire, a classic cut, elegant and expensive looking.

My breath hitched in my throat, a cold dread snaking its way through my veins.

Confusion swirled, thick and suffocating, pushing against the euphoria of last night.

Why would Michael have another engagement ring?

My mind raced, frantically trying to construct a logical explanation, any explanation that wasn’t the one forming in the darkest corners of my thoughts.

Perhaps it was a family heirloom he was going to get resized?

Maybe he had bought two for me and changed his mind?

No, the design was distinct enough from mine that it clearly wasn't a "backup" option.

Then, my eyes caught sight of a tiny, folded piece of cream-colored card tucked beneath the ring.

My hand trembled as I carefully pulled it out, my fingers feeling clumsy and numb.

The handwriting, elegant and familiar, was undeniably Michael’s.

I unfolded the card, my vision blurring, but the words were stark and clear.

"My Dearest Sarah, this is just the beginning of our forever."

Sarah.

My mother's name.

The air left my lungs in a ragged gasp, a sound that felt foreign and raw.

The ring box slipped from my grasp, clattering onto the hardwood floor with a sharp, echoing sound that seemed to shatter the silence of our once-happy home.

My legs gave out, and I sank to the floor, the world spinning around me in a nauseating blur of betrayal and disbelief.
