She preferred the hushed solitude of the library's furthest alcoves, her nose buried deep in ancient texts, far from the boisterous energy of the Hogwarts corridors.
Yet, on this particular Tuesday, her slight frame trembled amidst the recess chatter, a single piece of parchment clutched in her clammy hand.
It was not a love letter, nor a plea for help with overdue homework.
It was a confession, a testament to a truth so unsettling it threatened to unravel the very fabric of her carefully constructed world.
A Discovery in the Shadows
Just two nights prior, a restless urge for a particular book had led Elara deep into the Restricted Section, a place she knew she shouldn't be.
A faint, pulsing light had drawn her gaze beyond the dimly lit shelves, through a narrow, almost invisible archway she'd never noticed before.
Her curiosity, a defining Ravenclaw trait, had overridden her caution.
She'd crept forward, her heart thumping against her ribs like a trapped Snitch.
What she saw chilled her to the bone.
Professor Severus Snape, bathed in the sickly green glow of some arcane concoction, stood hunched over a swirling cauldron.
Around him, ancient Runes pulsed on the stone floor, emitting an unnatural hum.
He wasn't brewing a potion; he was performing a ritual, one that felt profoundly wrong, dangerously powerful, and utterly forbidden.
A strange, dark energy seemed to emanate from the very air, making the hairs on her arms stand on end.
Elara had ducked back, unseen, her mind reeling from the impossible sight.
She knew, with terrifying certainty, that she had witnessed something no student ever should.
The Desperate Plea
Sleep had evaded Elara since that night.
The image of Professor Snape, eyes alight with an unholy intensity, haunted her waking hours.
She was too young, too small, to confront such a secret.
To whom could she turn?
Dumbledore seemed too busy, too distant, too... grand.
Her house prefects were well-meaning, but this felt beyond their scope.
Then, an idea, fragile but hopeful, sparked in her mind: her brother, Arthur.
Arthur, a sixth-year Hufflepuff, was dependable, fiercely loyal, and possessed a quiet wisdom far beyond his years.
He wouldn't panic; he would know what to do.
She penned the letter under the invisibility charm of her four-poster bed, each word a desperate whisper of fear and confusion.
"Arthur," it began, "I've seen something terrible.
Something Professor Snape is doing.
It involves old magic, green fire, and a hum that makes your teeth ache.
It's in the hidden passage behind the Potions archives.
I don't understand it, but it feels wrong, dangerous.
Please, meet me by the Stone Gargoyle at midnight tonight.
I'm scared."
She folded it tightly, sealing it with a drop of innocent, plain wax.
The Owl's Fateful Flight
Now, in the chaotic heart of the recess, Elara spotted a familiar school owl, a plump barn owl named Hedwig (though not the Hedwig, as that one belonged to a certain famous boy) perched patiently by the Owlery entrance.
She gently coaxed it down, her voice a barely audible whisper over the din of student laughter and clanking armour.
"To Arthur Thorne, Hufflepuff common room," she murmured, tying the letter securely to its leg.
"Be quick, please.
It's urgent."
The owl hooted softly, a picture of reliable wisdom.
Then, with a sudden, inexplicable tilt of its head, it launched itself into the air.
Elara watched, a tiny spark of relief igniting in her chest.
But the spark was quickly extinguished, replaced by a cold dread.
The owl wasn't heading towards the West Wing, towards the Hufflepuff common room entrance.
It was veering sharply, fluttering through the enchanted ceiling, through a cascade of floating candles, straight towards the East Wing.
A gasp caught in Elara's throat.
"No!" she whispered, a desperate plea lost in the noise.
She began to run, weaving frantically through groups of chatting students, ignoring their startled glances.
"Come back!
You've got the wrong person!" she cried, her voice cracking.
The owl, however, seemed oblivious, a tiny, feathered projectile aimed with uncanny precision.
The Professor's Cold Gaze
Her heart hammered against her ribs, a drumbeat of impending doom.
It couldn't be.
It absolutely could not be.
But it was.
The owl landed, with a soft thud of feathers, directly on the shoulder of Professor Severus Snape.
He stood by an ancient tapestry depicting a battle between goblins and wizards, his usual rigid posture amplified by an aura of formidable indifference.
His gaze, normally fixed on some distant, disdainful point, flickered down to the owl.
