The air crackled with excitement.

Tomorrow was my wedding day.

My heart was overflowing with pure, unadulterated joy.

I was finally going to marry Mark, the love of my life.

We had planned every single detail for months.

Our future together felt like a beautiful, unfolding dream.

Sarah, my best friend since childhood, was my maid of honor.

She was more like a sister to me.

Sarah had been there for everything, through thick and thin.

She even helped Mark plan his elaborate proposal.

I trusted her with my entire world.

That night, I had my bachelorette party.

It was a tame, fun night with my closest girlfriends.

We laughed and reminisced about old times.

But I felt a little tired earlier than expected.

Around midnight, I decided to head home.

I just wanted to be fresh and rested for my big day.

I caught my best friend and my husband in our bed the night before our wedding.

Mark was supposedly at his bachelor party with his groomsmen.

Or so I thought.

Walking into our quiet house felt strange.

A soft light glowed from upstairs, from our bedroom.

My stomach dropped with a sudden, cold dread.

He should have been out, celebrating with his friends.

I told myself it was probably nothing, a misplaced light switch.

Maybe he came back for something he forgot.

I tiptoed up the stairs, my heart pounding a frantic rhythm against my ribs.

The bedroom door was slightly ajar.

A low murmur of voices drifted out from inside.

My breath hitched in my throat.

I froze, every nerve ending screaming.

Then I saw it.

A flash of blonde hair, unmistakably Sarah's.

And then Mark's arm, wrapped intimately around her.

They were in our bed.

My bed.

The world tilted, spinning violently off its axis.

The air left my lungs in one painful, guttural gasp.

It was not a dream.

It was the worst nightmare imaginable, unfolding before my very eyes.

My best friend.

My fiancé.

On the eve of our wedding.

Betrayal cut deeper than any knife, searing through my soul.

I didn't scream.

I couldn't.

My body froze in utter disbelief, utterly paralyzed.

A silent, burning sob ripped through me, tearing at my insides.

I backed away slowly, like a ghost haunting my own life.

Down the stairs, out the front door, into the cold night air.

I didn't stop running until my legs gave out and I couldn't breathe.
