I still can’t believe today was supposed to be a normal Tuesday.
My day had actually started pretty great.
I’d gotten a promotion at work, the kind I’d been chasing for years.
I texted Mark, my husband, immediately with the news.
He replied with a string of excited emojis and a promise to celebrate big.
“Dinner at ‘The Cozy Corner’ tonight?” he asked, naming our go-to spot.
It’s a small Italian place, tucked away, where we had our first date.
It felt perfect, a full-circle moment for us.
I spent the afternoon buzzing with happiness and anticipation.
I even called my sister, Sarah, to share the good news.
She was thrilled for me, or at least she sounded like it.
“We have to celebrate soon, all of us!” she said.
I told her about the dinner plans with Mark, and she agreed it was perfect.
Around 6 PM, I left the office, practically floating on air.
The late afternoon sun was golden, casting long shadows on the sidewalk.
I decided to walk to the restaurant; it was only a few blocks.
I wanted to savor every moment of this incredible day.
When I got within sight of The Cozy Corner, a wave of warmth washed over me.
I imagined Mark already inside, maybe ordering our usual bottle of Chianti.
I pictured his face, smiling, ready to toast to my success.
Then, I saw them.
Through the large, arched window, near our favorite corner booth.
Two figures.
Familiar figures.
One was undeniably Mark.
His distinctive dark hair, the way he leans in when he’s engaged in conversation.
The other was a woman, her back mostly to me.
Her blonde hair was styled exactly like Sarah’s.
My heart gave a strange little lurch, a skip that felt entirely wrong.
No, it couldn’t be.
Sarah had her own dinner plans tonight, she’d told me earlier.
This was a coincidence, a trick of the light, a mistaken identity.
I slowed my pace, my feet suddenly heavy.
My breath hitched in my throat as I drew closer.
I could see their table clearly now.
They were laughing softly, their heads close together.
Too close, for just friends, for just family.
Then I saw it.
His hand was on top of hers, their fingers intertwined, resting on the white tablecloth.
A cold, sharp shock shot through my entire body.
It wasn’t a casual touch.
It wasn't a comforting gesture.
It was intimate.
It was unmistakable.
It was Mark.
And it was Sarah.
My world, which had been so bright moments ago, plunged into absolute darkness.
The sounds of the city, the gentle hum of traffic, the distant laughter, all faded away.
The golden sunlight seemed to mock me, illuminating the scene in stark relief.
My eyes burned, but no tears came immediately.
It was more like a physical blow, a punch to the gut that stole my air.
My mind reeled, trying to process the impossibility of what I was seeing.
My husband.
My sister.
Together.
Like that.
In our restaurant.
Where we'd shared so many memories, so many dreams.
A sickening realization began to unfurl within me.
