My hands are still shaking so much I can barely type this.
I don’t even know where to begin.
My entire life just imploded.
I’m sitting here in the wreckage of what used to be my dream.
It all started so innocently, like all nightmares do.
Liam and I met in college.
We were inseparable.
Best friends from day one, sharing everything.
We dreamed big, talked for hours about our future.
He was like the brother I never had.
After graduation, we poured everything we had into starting our own business.
It wasn't just a job; it was our passion project.
It was 'our baby.'
We spent years, literally years, building it from the ground up.
Late nights fueled by cheap coffee.
Sacrificing weekends, holidays, everything.
We put every single penny we earned, every single investment, back into the business.
We even lived together in a small apartment above the office to save money.
That’s how dedicated we were.
Our trust in each other was absolute, unconditional.
He handled the financial side, the numbers, the contracts.
I managed the creative and operational aspects.
It was a perfect partnership, or so I believed.
Lately, though, things felt… off.
Liam started acting distant.
He’d be secretive with his phone.
He’d brush off my questions about our quarterly reports.
He told me he was just stressed, overwhelmed with the growth.
I believed him.
Why wouldn't I?
He was my best friend.
My family.
He’d say, "Don't worry your pretty little head, I've got this."
And I let him.
I let him because I trusted him implicitly.
Then came the red flag I couldn’t ignore.
Our landlord called yesterday, confused.
He said he hadn't received rent for the office or our apartment for three months.
My blood ran cold.
I immediately called Liam, but his phone went straight to voicemail.
I tried calling his family, but they hadn't heard from him either.
A knot formed in my stomach, tighter than any I’d ever felt.
I rushed to the bank, adrenaline coursing through my veins.
I knew our business accounts, I had access, but Liam was the primary account holder for many.
The teller, looking uncomfortable, told me there was an alert on our main business account.
It had been closed.
Closed?
My heart dropped into my stomach.
She couldn’t tell me more, citing privacy.
Panic set in.
I went home, frantically searching through our shared files, our digital documents.
That's when I found it.
A discreetly hidden folder on our shared drive.
Password protected.
I tried every combination I could think of: his dog's name, his birthday, our business anniversary.
Finally, "OURDREAM."
It unlocked.
Inside, there were emails.
Hundreds of them.
Emails to lawyers, to prospective buyers.
Emails discussing terms, valuations, closing dates.
Emails about selling our business.
Emails from Liam.
My hands started shaking uncontrollably.
