My heart feels like a raw, exposed nerve ending.
I’m staring at a photo that has systematically dismantled every single moment of the last decade of my life.
For weeks, something had felt off, a whisper of unease I tried to silence.
Mark had been "working late" more often, his phone always facedown, hushed tones during calls.
I told myself it was stress from his demanding job, a new project, anything to soothe the creeping dread.
He travels a lot for work, or so I believed.
Every other month, a "business trip" to some exotic location, always alone.
He’d send me postcards, buy me small gifts, call every night from the hotel.
He’d tell me he missed me, that he couldn't wait to be home.
I believed him with every fiber of my being.
Last night, he left for another one of these trips.
I was tidying up his study, a rare foray into his meticulously organized chaos.
I saw his old laptop, one he rarely uses, sitting open on his desk.
A notification popped up, from a cloud storage service, asking to sync new photos.
Curiosity, pure and simple, made me click it open.
Then the album loaded.
"Maui Bliss - Our Anniversary."
The first picture showed Mark, shirtless, laughing, holding hands with a stunning woman I’d never seen before.
They were on a beach, waves crashing gently behind them.
Both wore matching leis.
And on their left hands, gleaming brightly, were wedding rings.
My breath hitched in my throat, a physical blow to my chest.
I scrolled, my fingers trembling so violently I almost dropped the mouse.
Picture after picture.
The same woman.
Different exotic locations.
A cliffside resort in Santorini.
A bustling marketplace in Marrakech.
A quiet cabin in Banff.
Each album dated, perfectly aligning with his "business trips."
The smiles on their faces were not forced, not posed; they were genuine, deeply in love.
There were photos of them kissing, embracing, holding hands, looking into each other's eyes with an intimacy that tore my soul apart.
In one photo, they were cutting a wedding cake, her in a simple white dress, him in a light suit.
The date on that photo was two years ago, just after he told me he was on a "critical client meeting" in Hawaii.
