My heart is still racing, even hours later.
My daughter, Lily, just turned six.
It was supposed to be the most magical day.
We’d spent weeks planning her unicorn-themed birthday party in our backyard.
Every detail, from the rainbow cake to the glittery balloons, was perfect.
Her little face lit up with pure joy as her friends arrived.
Seeing her so happy is my entire world.
I love that child more than life itself.
Then he showed up.
My ex-husband, Mark, always manages to suck the air out of any room.
We have a custody agreement, so I couldn't exactly uninvite him.
He barely acknowledges me, which usually suits me fine.
Today, though, he seemed more agitated than usual.
I watched him from across the yard, talking to a few of the other parents.
He kept glancing at Lily, who was busy trying to pin the tail on the unicorn.
A knot formed in my stomach.
It always does when he's around.
He excused himself from the adults and walked straight towards Lily.
My breath hitched a little.
I thought, Don't you dare ruin this for her.
He bent down, putting his arm around her small shoulders.
Lily looked up at him, her eyes wide.
She loves her dad, despite everything.
I tried to busy myself, arranging some snacks on the table.
But my eyes kept darting back to them.
He whispered something into her ear.
Lily’s smile slowly faded.
Her head tilted, a confused frown creasing her brow.
My heart pounded against my ribs.
I started walking closer, trying to look casual, pretending I needed to check on the cake.
I was only a few feet away when I heard his voice.
It was low, but clear enough in the sudden lull in the party chatter.
"Mommy isn't your real mommy, sweetie."
The words hit me like a physical blow.
The ground swayed beneath my feet.
My ears started ringing.
I froze, my hand clutching a half-eaten chip bag.
Lily looked from him to me, her innocent eyes filled with a terrifying mix of confusion and fear.
"What?" she whispered, her little voice cracking.
Mark looked up, his eyes meeting mine, and a cruel smirk spread across his face.
He knew I heard him.
He did it on purpose.
Right there, at her sixth birthday party, in front of all her friends and their parents.
The world went silent around me.
The colorful balloons, the happy music, the sound of children laughing – it all blurred into a deafening static.
My vision tunneled, focusing only on Lily's face.
Her mouth quivered.
Her eyes, usually so full of light, were suddenly clouded with doubt.
The betrayal was so deep, so vicious, I could barely breathe.
This wasn't just about me anymore.
This was about Lily.
