The excitement was electric, a buzzing warmth that filled every corner of my being.

It was supposed to be the happiest night of my life, the official beginning of forever with Mark.

Our engagement party was a whirlwind of laughter, clinking glasses, and futures meticulously planned.

I remember floating through the room, feeling like the luckiest woman alive, glowing in my white dress.

Mark, my incredible fiancé, was charming everyone, just as he always did.

He had this way of making everyone feel special, a trait I adored.

My mom, Sarah, was there too, flitting between guests, radiating pride and joy.

She and Mark had always gotten along famously, a bond I’d cherished and found comforting.

I’d just stepped away to freshen up, a quick break from the endless congratulations and flashes of cameras.

When I re-entered the ballroom, a wave of familiar music washed over me, a song Mark and I had danced to countless times.

My eyes scanned the crowd, searching for him, eager to pull him back into my embrace.

Then I saw them.

They were tucked away in a dimly lit alcove near the grand fireplace, partially obscured by a towering floral arrangement.

It was Mark.

And it was my mom.

My smile, which had been plastered on my face all evening, began to falter, a strange unease prickling my skin.

I saw my fiancé kiss my mom at our engagement party. My heart stopped.

They were standing incredibly close, their heads tilted towards each other, engaged in what looked like an intensely private conversation.

My breath hitched, and a cold dread started to creep into my chest, tightening its grip.

I told myself it was nothing, just a mother and her soon-to-be son-in-law sharing a moment.

But then Mark’s hand went up, gently cupping my mom’s cheek.

Her eyes fluttered closed, a soft, almost imperceptible sigh escaping her lips.

And then he leaned in.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

His lips met hers, a soft, tender, unmistakable kiss.

It wasn't a quick peck, not a friendly gesture; it was prolonged, intimate, and utterly devastating.

The world around me vanished, sound faded, and the vibrant party became a blurry, silent tableau.

My heart, which had been soaring moments before, seized in my chest, a physical punch I felt deep in my bones.

Disbelief warred with a searing, agonizing certainty.

I felt a guttural scream rising in my throat, but no sound escaped.

My vision blurred, not from tears yet, but from the sheer force of the shock.

I couldn't move.

My legs felt rooted to the opulent carpet, my body frozen in a tableau of pure horror.

They broke apart then, my mom’s hand lingering on his arm, a secret smile passing between them.

A smile meant only for each other.

A smile that ripped through me like a jagged blade.

I felt an immediate, overwhelming need to escape, to run until I couldn't breathe anymore.

But something else took over, a primal surge of anger mixed with an awful, heartbreaking curiosity.

I needed to know.

I needed to confront them, to shatter this grotesque scene into a million pieces.

I pushed through the joyous crowd, my movements stiff and unnatural, like a broken doll.

Every step was a battle against my crumbling sanity.

My voice, when it finally came out, was a raw, choked whisper, barely audible above the music.

"What... what are you doing?"

They both spun around, their faces morphing from secretive tenderness to abject terror.

My mom’s eyes widened, a flicker of guilt, then something darker, crossing her features.

Mark’s jaw dropped, his face paling to an ashen grey.

"Honey, it's not what you think," Mark stammered, taking a step towards me, his hand outstretched.

I recoiled as if burned.
