I saw my husband kissing his ex-girlfriend by our son's birthday cake.

The smell of balloons and frosting filled the air, a scent that always made my heart swell with joy for Michael's birthday.

He was turning seven, and all he wanted was a superhero party, complete with a cake shaped like Captain America’s shield.

I’d spent weeks planning every detail, from the tiny capes for the juice boxes to the custom-made hero masks.

My husband, David, had been acting a little distant lately, but I chalked it up to stress at work, telling myself we’d reconnect once the party chaos subsided.

He’d left earlier to "finalize some decorations" at the community hall we’d rented, promising to call if he needed help.

I arrived a few minutes late, juggling a massive present and Michael’s overflowing backpack, excited to see the finished setup.

The hall doors were slightly ajar, a muffled hum of music already escaping.

I pushed the door open, my smile wide, ready to embrace the organized chaos of a kids' party.

My breath hitched in my throat as my eyes scanned the room.

Near the brightly lit cake table, right beside Captain America’s shield, stood David.

I saw my husband kissing his ex-girlfriend by our son's birthday cake.

And he wasn’t alone.

His arms were wrapped around a woman, her face buried in his shoulder.

It was Sarah, his ex-girlfriend from college, the one he swore was "ancient history" years ago.

My mind refused to process what my eyes were seeing.

Then, in slow motion, they pulled apart, her eyes lingering on his, a soft, intimate smile playing on her lips.

He leaned down, and kissed her.

Right there.

By our son's birthday cake.

My world tilted, the sound of party music suddenly deafening, then fading into a hollow hum.

The massive present I was holding slipped from my numb fingers, thudding softly onto the tiled floor.

A sharp, icy shock pulsed through my veins, freezing me in place.

David looked up, his eyes meeting mine, and his face instantly drained of all color.

Sarah turned too, her smirk dissolving into a look of startled defiance.

The air crackled with a sickening silence, the happy anticipation replaced by a suffocating dread.

I could feel the heat rising in my cheeks, a mixture of humiliation and blinding rage.

My son, Michael, was just around the corner, his joyous shouts echoing from the bounce house.

He was utterly oblivious.

How could he do this?

How could he choose our son's most special day, a day about family and celebration, to shatter everything we had?

Every happy memory, every shared laugh, every promise whispered, felt like a cruel lie.

My hands began to tremble uncontrollably, a deep ache blossoming in my chest.
