My heart still aches thinking about that day.

Everything was perfect, or so I thought.

Mark and I were planning our dream wedding, just two months away.

Sarah, my best friend since kindergarten, was my maid of honor.

She was practically family, always there for me, my rock.

We spent countless hours together, laughing, reminiscing, dreaming about my future with Mark.

They even seemed to get along great, which made me so happy.

I thought I had it all: a loving fiancé, a loyal best friend, and a beautiful life ahead.

The week before, I’d been working extra shifts at the hospital.

Mark offered to help Sarah with some last-minute wedding favors at our place.

I remember feeling so grateful for them both.

“Teamwork makes the dream work,” I’d joked to Mark over the phone.

He’d laughed, a warm, familiar sound that now feels like a cruel echo.

I finished my shift early that Tuesday.

The city lights blurred past my car window as I drove home, a lightness in my chest.

I decided to surprise them, maybe bring home some takeout.

I walked in on my best friend and fiancé kissing, shattering my wedding dreams.

The apartment building was quiet when I pulled into my usual spot.

I grabbed my keys, a huge smile on my face.

As I approached our front door, I heard muffled voices.

My smile faltered slightly; maybe they were just talking loudly.

I fumbled with the lock, my heart inexplicably starting to pound.

The door clicked open, and I stepped inside, calling out, “I’m home, surpr—”

My voice died in my throat, swallowed by the scene unfolding before me.

There, in the living room, bathed in the soft glow of the table lamp, were Mark and Sarah.

They weren’t working on wedding favors.

They were tangled together on our sofa.

Her hands were cupped around his face, pulling him closer.

His arm was wrapped tightly around her waist.

Their lips were pressed together in a deep, undeniable kiss.

My world tilted, violently.

The takeout bag slipped from my numb fingers, hitting the hardwood floor with a soft thud.

The sound seemed to explode in the sudden, horrifying silence.

They broke apart instantly, eyes wide, mouths agape.

Sarah’s face, usually so warm and familiar, was now a mask of pure terror and guilt.

Mark looked like a deer caught in headlights, his face pale, utterly exposed.

I felt a physical punch to my gut, a wave of nausea washing over me.

This couldn’t be real.

My best friend.

My fiancé.

My future.

All dissolving before my eyes in one sickening instant.

My vision blurred with tears, hot and stinging.

I wanted to scream, to rage, to demand an explanation.

But no sound would come out.

It was as if my voice had been ripped from me.

My legs felt like jelly, barely holding me upright.

I stared at them, truly seeing them, and the betrayal clawed at my chest.

How long?

How could they?
