I walked in on my best friend and my fiancé planning their wedding in my living room.

My stomach still drops every time I think about that afternoon.

I had been humming, a little tune about future wedding plans and honeymoons.

My heart was so full, so utterly overflowing with happiness just moments before.

I was finally home after a long, stressful week at work.

All I wanted was to kick off my shoes and melt into Mike’s arms.

He was my fiancé, my rock, my future.

And Sarah, my best friend since kindergarten, was supposedly coming over later that evening.

We were going to pick out bridesmaid dresses online, she was so excited for me.

The door was unlocked, which was a little odd.

Mike was usually so meticulous about security.

I pushed it open, a goofy smile still plastered on my face.

A low murmur of voices drifted from the living room.

That wasn't unusual; sometimes Mike would be on a work call or talking to his mom.

But the voices were hushed, almost conspiratorial.

I took a few steps further into the hallway, my keys still clutched in my hand.

Then I heard Sarah's laugh, a sound I had always cherished.

It was bright, free, and completely unburdened.

A knot began to form in my chest, a tiny, cold pebble of unease.

I reached the archway leading into the living room.

I walked in on my best friend and my fiancé planning their wedding in my living room.

My breath caught.

The world seemed to tilt on its axis.

There they were.

Mike and Sarah.

Sitting closely on my sofa.

Mike’s arm was casually draped over the back of the cushion behind her.

Their heads were bent together over his laptop.

It was open to a website.

A wedding website.

Not our wedding website.

This one had a picture of a venue, a stunning garden estate I’d admired.

"This is perfect, darling," Sarah whispered, her fingers tracing something on the screen.

Darling.

My vision blurred, then snapped into sickeningly sharp focus.

Mike looked up, his eyes wide with a terror that mirrored my own.

His face drained of all color.

Sarah, still oblivious, leaned her head against his shoulder.

"The catering options look divine, don't they?" she murmured, a soft sigh escaping her lips.

Then she saw me.

Her head shot up, eyes locking onto mine.

Her smile vanished, replaced by a mask of horror.

The laptop screen, still glowing, reflected their faces and mine, a silent, damning triptych.

My heart didn't just break; it imploded.

It was a physical wrenching, a tearing sensation deep inside my chest.

My fiancé.

My best friend.

Planning their wedding.

In my living room.

The irony was a cruel, twisted blade twisting in the wound.

I couldn't speak.

No sound escaped my throat, only a dry, rasping gasp.

My hands began to tremble uncontrollably.

The keys slipped from my grasp, clattering loudly on the hardwood floor.

The sound seemed to echo in the sudden, deafening silence of the room.

Mike scrambled to close the laptop, but it was too late.

The image of the elegant wedding invitation on the screen was burned into my mind.

Their names.
