I walked in on my best friend emptying my wedding fund into his own account.

It was supposed to be the happiest day of my life, a future I’d built meticulously, brick by emotional brick.

I was buzzing with excitement, thinking about floral arrangements and guest lists.

My best friend, Mark, had been by my side through everything since grade school.

He was like a brother, truly.

My fiancé, Sarah, and I had poured our hearts and savings into this wedding.

Every spare dollar went into that joint wedding account we’d set up, slowly watching it grow.

We had a shared vision for our big day, a beautiful, intimate ceremony that felt just right.

Mark had even offered to help us manage some of the wedding finances, saying he was "good with numbers" and wanted to take some stress off us.

It felt like such a kind, selfless gesture at the time.

I trusted him implicitly, without a single doubt in my mind.

He knew all our dreams, all our plans.

He was always there, a constant presence.

We’d laughed, cried, and shared every secret imaginable.

That Tuesday afternoon started like any other, I had left work early, feeling a bit under the weather.

I remembered Mark was supposed to be at my place, supposedly helping Sarah with some errands, but she had called to say she was running late.

I walked in on my best friend emptying my wedding fund into his own account.

The apartment was quiet when I let myself in, a strange silence that felt off.

I walked towards the living room, planning to just collapse on the couch.

That’s when I heard the low hum of my laptop coming from our study.

My heart gave a little jump; I thought Sarah had forgotten it on.

As I approached the study door, I saw it was slightly ajar.

A sliver of light escaped, illuminating the hallway floor.

I pushed the door open gently, ready to tell Sarah I was home.

But it wasn’t Sarah.

It was Mark, hunched over my laptop, completely absorbed.

His back was to me, his shoulders tensed.

He didn't hear me come in, totally lost in whatever he was doing.

Curiosity, then a flicker of unease, made me hesitate.

Why was he using my laptop?

And why was he so secretive about it?

I took another silent step forward, trying to get a better look at the screen.

Then I saw it.

My breath caught in my throat.

On the screen was our banking app.

Our wedding fund account.

And an active transaction.

An outgoing transfer.

A huge one.

To an account I didn't recognize.

My mind raced, trying to comprehend what I was seeing.

No, this couldn't be right.

My blood ran cold.

The account name on the receiving end flashed clearly: "Mark D."

My best friend.

My brother.
