They say your wedding day is supposed to be the happiest day of your life.

Mine never came.

I remember everything about that afternoon with a clarity that still stings every single day.

The air was crisp, the autumn sun was gentle, and a nervous flutter of excitement danced in my stomach.

It was the day of our wedding rehearsal.

Mark and I had been together for five years, building a life, a home, a future that felt absolutely perfect.

Sarah, my best friend since kindergarten, was my maid of honor.

She knew all my secrets, all my dreams, all my fears.

She was family, closer than a sister, the one person I thought I could trust with anything.

I arrived at the venue a little early, wanting to double-check a few details with the coordinator.

My heart was practically pounding with joy and anticipation.

I pictured walking down that aisle, seeing Mark’s face, starting our forever.

I walked in on my best friend kissing my fiancé at our wedding rehearsal.

The main hall was empty, but I heard hushed voices coming from the small lounge near the back entrance.

A small smile played on my lips, thinking it was probably Mark and Sarah, maybe discussing last-minute plans or trying to calm each other’s nerves.

I pushed the door open, ready to playfully scold them for being there without me.

The world tilted on its axis.

My smile vanished, replaced by a cold, sickening shock that seized my entire body.

Mark was there, leaning against the wall, his eyes closed.

And Sarah was pressed against him, her arms wrapped around his neck.

Her lips were on his.

It wasn't a friendly peck, it was a deep, consuming kiss.

A kiss that screamed betrayal.

My breath hitched in my throat, a silent scream trying to claw its way out.

The small, white bridal bouquet I was holding slipped from my numb fingers, clattering softly onto the polished floor.

They pulled apart slowly, their eyes still hazy, until they saw me.

The look on their faces – first confusion, then horror, then a pathetic, desperate guilt – is burned into my memory.

Mark’s face went white, his jaw dropping as if he’d seen a ghost.

Sarah’s eyes, usually so warm and full of laughter, were wide and filled with shame.

"Emma," Mark whispered, his voice a strangled sound I barely recognized.

I couldn’t speak.

No words could possibly convey the earthquake that just ripped through my soul.

The dream, the trust, the love, the friendship – everything shattered into a million irreparable pieces in that single, agonizing moment.

My vision blurred, not from tears yet, but from the sheer force of disbelief.

It felt like a cruel joke, a nightmare I was desperate to wake up from.

But this was real.
