I remember picking out that dress like it was yesterday.

It was a soft lavender, flowy and elegant, perfect for our engagement party.

Mark said I looked like an angel when I tried it on for him.

Sarah, my sister, stood beside us, nodding enthusiastically, her eyes sparkling with what I thought was pure joy for me.

We had been inseparable since childhood, sharing secrets, dreams, and everything in between.

She was my built-in best friend, my confidante, my rock.

And Mark, my wonderful Mark, was the love of my life, the man I was going to spend forever with.

Our engagement party was supposed to be the first big step into that forever.

The day itself felt like a dream.

The venue was beautiful, adorned with fairy lights and fragrant flowers.

Our closest friends and family filled the room, their laughter and chatter creating a joyous buzz.

I walked in on my fiancé and my sister kissing at our engagement party last Saturday.

I was floating, high on love and happiness, completely oblivious to the storm brewing beneath the surface.

Mark was a little distant, I noticed, but I brushed it off, attributing it to pre-wedding jitters or the stress of hosting.

Sarah was everywhere, playing the perfect maid-of-honor, making sure everyone had a drink, chatting animatedly with guests.

She even helped me fix my hair when a stray curl came loose.

Around 8 PM, I realized I hadn’t seen Mark for a while.

I thought he might be in the small lounge area off the main hall, taking a breather.

I decided to go find him, perhaps steal a quick kiss and remind him how much I loved him.

My heart was light as I walked down the short, carpeted hallway.

I heard hushed voices coming from the lounge, a little too intimate for casual conversation.

A tiny prickle of unease started to form in my stomach.

I paused, just outside the slightly ajar door, ready to playfully burst in.

But then I heard Sarah’s unmistakable giggle, soft and low.

My heart skipped a beat, but not with joy.

Confusion warred with a strange, creeping dread.

I pushed the door open just a crack more, peering inside.

And that’s when my world imploded.

My fiancé, Mark, was pressed against the wall, his hands tangled in Sarah’s hair.

And Sarah, my own sister, was kissing him back, passionately, her eyes closed.

It wasn't a quick peck; it was deep, consuming, utterly undeniable.

The air was sucked from my lungs.

My vision swam, the fairy lights blurring into frantic, aggressive streaks of color.

A silent scream tore through my throat, but no sound escaped.
