The morning air was crisp and sweet, carrying the scent of early autumn roses.

I woke up feeling like I was floating, completely weightless with joy.

Today was my wedding day.

My stomach fluttered with butterflies, a happy, excited swarm.

Mark was everything I had ever dreamed of in a partner.

Kind, funny, steady, and he looked at me like I was the only star in his sky.

Sarah, my maid of honor and best friend since kindergarten, was already at the house.

She was buzzing around, making sure everything was perfect.

“You look absolutely radiant, Anya,” she’d said, her eyes sparkling, as she helped me with my veil.

I had never felt more beautiful, or more loved, in my entire life.

The church was just a few blocks away, a historic stone building Mark and I had picked because it felt so timeless.

We arrived, and the bridesmaids whisked me into the small private room near the sanctuary.

My heart was practically beating out of my chest.

A nervous, happy energy pulsed through every fiber of my being.

I walked in on my fiancé kissing my maid of honor minutes before our wedding.

The photographer wanted a few last shots of me alone, by the ornate altar.

“Just a few minutes, darling,” my mom whispered, adjusting my train one last time.

She then went to gather the rest of the bridal party, leaving me to my quiet anticipation.

I loved the silence of the empty sanctuary, the way the stained-glass windows painted the aisles with soft, colored light.

I took a deep, steadying breath, trying to calm the joyful chaos inside me.

Then I heard it.

Muffled voices, distinctively Mark’s and Sarah’s, coming from a small alcove just beyond the main altar.

A tiny frown creased my brow.

They should have been with the others, preparing for the ceremony to begin.

A flicker of annoyance, quickly dismissed as pre-wedding nerves.

Maybe they were just going over last-minute details.

I decided to go say hello, to share my excitement with them.

With my veil flowing behind me, I gracefully stepped towards the sound.

The voices grew clearer, a hushed murmur.

Then I paused, my hand instinctively flying to my chest.

Something in the tone, the intimacy, made me stop dead in my tracks.

I peered around the ancient stone column, my heart suddenly pounding for a different reason.

And then I saw it.

My breath hitched.

The world tilted on its axis.

Mark, my fiancé, was pressed against the wall, his hands tangled in Sarah’s hair.

And Sarah, my maid of honor, my best friend, was kissing him back with an intensity that stole the air from my lungs.

It wasn't a quick peck; it was deep, passionate, undeniable.

Their bodies were flush against each other, completely oblivious to anything else.

My beautiful white dress, my carefully placed veil, the joyous anticipation… all of it evaporated in an instant.

A cold, sickening dread washed over me, numbing my limbs.

My eyes burned, but no tears would fall.

It was as if my body had frozen in pure, unadulterated shock.

The image branded itself onto my mind, a searing, grotesque photograph I knew I would never unsee.
