My world was perfect just yesterday.

I mean, truly, undeniably perfect.

Sarah was everything I had ever dreamed of in a partner.

Smart, funny, beautiful, and she understood me like no one else.

We’d been together for five years.

Five incredible years of building a future, planning a home, dreaming about kids.

The wedding was set for Saturday.

This was Thursday evening, our rehearsal dinner night.

My stomach fluttered with a mix of nerves and overwhelming excitement.

This was it.

The beginning of forever.

We decided to meet at the church hall a little early, just Sarah, Dad, and me, to go over some last-minute details with the coordinator.

Sarah had gone ahead, saying she needed to check on the floral arrangements.

My dad, Richard, was supposed to pick me up, but his phone died, so I decided to drive myself.

The late afternoon sun was casting long, golden shadows across the parking lot.

Everything felt bathed in a warm, ethereal glow.

I remembered thinking, "This is what happiness feels like."

I walked toward the side entrance, which I knew would be unlocked.

I could hear soft murmuring from inside, faint voices.

I walked in on my fiancée kissing my dad at our wedding rehearsal.

I smiled, imagining Sarah and Dad, probably laughing about some silly wedding detail.

They had always gotten along so well.

It warmed my heart, seeing my two favorite people connect.

My dad had always been my rock.

He was my hero, my mentor, the man who taught me everything about integrity and loyalty.

He’d even helped me pick out Sarah’s engagement ring.

He had been so genuinely happy for us.

His eyes had welled up when I told him I was proposing.

I pushed the door open quietly, wanting to surprise them.

The hall was dimly lit, the main lights not yet on, only the ambient glow from the windows.

My eyes adjusted.

And then I saw them.

They weren't standing by the altar.

They were in a secluded corner, near the caterer’s entrance.

Too close.

Much too close for comfort.

My breath hitched in my throat.

My smile evaporated.

My hand, still on the doorknob, instinctively recoiled as if burned.

It was Sarah.

And it was my dad.

They were in an embrace.

Not a friendly hug, not a congratulatory squeeze.

This was intimate.

Deeply, sickeningly intimate.

Her hands were tangled in his hair.

His arms were tight around her waist.

And their lips were locked.

A slow, lingering kiss that stole the air from my lungs.

The world tilted on its axis.

A cold, nauseating wave washed over me.

My vision blurred at the edges.

It felt like I’d been hit by a truck, then instantly frozen solid.

No, not frozen.

Shattered.

Every cell in my body vibrated with a shock so profound, it stole my ability to think, to move, to even scream.

This couldn’t be real.

My mind screamed, "NO!"

This was a nightmare, a cruel trick of the light, a hallucination brought on by pre-wedding stress.
