The morning of my daughter Lily’s seventh birthday party felt like pure magic. Every detail was planned meticulously, from the unicorn-themed decorations to the custom-made rainbow cake that had taken weeks to design. Lily had been counting down the days, her little face alight with anticipation. I wanted this day to be absolutely perfect, a memory she’d cherish forever.

Her father, Mark, my ex-husband, had promised to be there, as always. We’d had our struggles since the divorce, but we always tried to put Lily first. He even said he’d bring the ice cream, a small gesture of participation. I had a good feeling about it.

I arrived at the community hall early to make sure everything was just right. The balloons were floating, the goodie bags were laid out, and the colorful banner read, “Happy 7th Birthday, Lily!” My heart swelled with love and pride. I quickly scanned the main table, checking for the cake.

That’s when my world tilted. The space where Lily’s beautiful custom rainbow unicorn cake should have been sitting was empty. My breath hitched in my throat. I looked around frantically. Had I put it in the kitchen? No, it was supposed to be the centerpiece.

A knot of panic tightened in my stomach. Then, I saw it. On the far end of the table, not in the usual spot, sat two cakes.

I walked into my daughter's birthday party and discovered my ex-husband had given his new girlfriend's daughter a bigger, better cake!

One was a small, generic, store-bought vanilla cake, hastily decorated with a few sprinkles. It looked… sad. The other cake, right beside it, was larger, professionally decorated with shimmering blue frosting, a perfectly sculpted mermaid tail, and delicate edible pearls. It was stunning.

My eyes darted around the room, searching for an explanation. Then I saw Mark. He was standing with a woman I recognized as Sarah, his new girlfriend, and her daughter, Chloe. They were all smiling brightly. Chloe, about Lily's age, was pointing excitedly at the mermaid cake.

A cold dread seeped into my bones. My mind raced, trying to make sense of what I was seeing. The generic cake… could that be Lily’s? But where was her special cake? And why was there a second, much grander cake?

I walked towards them, my feet feeling heavy, each step a battle against the growing wave of nausea. Lily’s custom cake, the one we’d picked out together, was nowhere to be found. The mermaid cake was clearly meant for Chloe. I could hear Mark explaining to Chloe how special her cake was.

My head began to throb. My heart felt like it was being squeezed in a vice. I got closer, close enough to hear their conversation.

"Isn't it beautiful, sweetie?" Sarah cooed to Chloe, "Your dad got it just for your special day!"

Chloe giggled, "It's even better than the unicorn one!" My blood ran cold.

I finally managed to speak, my voice a strained whisper, "Mark? Where is Lily's cake?" He turned, a sheepish, almost defiant look on his face. He gestured vaguely at the small vanilla cake.

"Oh, uh, that's it," he mumbled. "The bakery messed up. They gave me this one by mistake. So I just... brought it."
