Tonight was supposed to be perfect, our ten-year anniversary.

I’d spent all day getting ready, humming our song, picking out the dress he loved.

Every year, we celebrated at “The Gilded Spoon,” the fancy downtown restaurant where he first told me he loved me.

My heart was practically beating out of my chest with anticipation as I hailed the cab.

He was already there, he texted, saying he wanted to surprise me with the best table.

I paid the driver, adjusted my sapphire necklace, and took a deep, excited breath.

The hostess greeted me warmly, her smile fading slightly when I mentioned my reservation under “Smith.”

“Oh, yes, Mr. Smith already has a table,” she said, gesturing vaguely towards the back.

A small flutter of unease stirred in my stomach, but I dismissed it as pre-anniversary jitters.

The restaurant was beautifully dim, candles flickering on every table, soft jazz playing.

I walked slowly, scanning the faces, my own smile ready to bloom when I saw him.

Then I saw him.

I walked into our anniversary dinner and saw my husband proposing to another woman.

He was at our favorite corner booth, the one with the velvet seats and the view of the city lights.

He was on one knee.

My breath hitched, a sudden, icy shock seizing my lungs.

My first thought was a proposal, a surprise renewal of vows, a grand romantic gesture.

Then I saw the woman sitting opposite him.

She wasn’t me.

My vision tunneled, the soft jazz now a roaring static in my ears.

Her hand, adorned with perfectly manicured nails I didn't recognize, was reaching out.

His face, the one I had kissed for a decade, was beaming up at her, utterly consumed.

He held a small, velvet box, open, revealing a diamond that glittered under the low light.

It was identical to my engagement ring, a family heirloom he had promised me was unique.

The world tilted violently on its axis, every single memory, every shared laugh, every quiet moment together, twisting into a grotesque lie.

My legs felt like jelly, rooted to the spot by a horrifying gravity.

I couldn’t move, couldn’t breathe, couldn’t comprehend the scene unfolding before my disbelieving eyes.

The happy couple – a couple I was clearly not part of – seemed to exist in a silent, glass-enclosed bubble.

They laughed softly, his hand covering hers, then he slipped the ring onto her finger.

She beamed, tears of joy streaming down her face, and leaned in to kiss him.

It was a long, tender kiss, full of intimacy that ripped through my soul like a thousand knives.

This wasn't just a mistake, a misunderstanding, a cruel prank.

This was real.

This was his life, a life he had apparently been building right under my nose, while I was planning our anniversary.

The hostess, noticing my frozen state, approached cautiously.

“Ma’am, are you alright?” she whispered, her voice laced with concern.
