You know those days where everything just feels… perfect?

That was yesterday for me.

The sun was shining, I’d closed a big deal at work, and I was humming a little tune on my way home, already thinking about what Mark and I would have for dinner.

We had plans to watch that new movie everyone was talking about.

I pictured him on the couch, maybe already started dinner, waiting for me with his usual warm smile.

Our little house, our sanctuary, felt like the safest place on earth.

My sister, Emily, had been staying with us for a few weeks, helping out after a tough breakup of her own.

I loved having her around; we were always so close, like two peas in a pod since we were kids.

It felt good to have my two favorite people under one roof.

I pulled into the driveway, grabbed my purse, and felt a rush of warmth just thinking about walking through that door.

The front door was slightly ajar, which was unusual.

"Mark? Emily? I'm home!" I called out, my voice bright with anticipation.

No answer, just a strange, heavy silence hanging in the air.

A tiny prickle of unease started to crawl up my spine.

I walked into our home and saw my husband kissing my sister, right on our couch.

Maybe they were in the backyard?

I pushed the door open further, stepping inside our quiet living room.

Then, I saw it.

My breath hitched in my throat, a sudden, cold fist seizing my lungs.

There, on our beige couch, the one we’d picked out together for our first anniversary.

There he was, Mark.

And there she was, Emily.

Their bodies were tangled, lips locked, hands exploring.

It wasn't a friendly hug.

It was an undeniable, raw, passionate kiss.

My Mark.

My Emily.

In my home.

On our couch.

The world tilted.

The floor beneath me seemed to liquefy, my legs suddenly too weak to hold me upright.

A guttural sound escaped my lips, a strangled gasp that didn't even sound like my own.

Their heads snapped up, eyes wide, guilty, caught in the act.

Mark scrambled off Emily, who pulled her shirt down with trembling hands, her face crimson.

"Sarah! No, wait, it's not what you think!" Mark stammered, his voice laced with panic.

But it was exactly what I thought.

It was worse than anything I could have ever imagined.

The air in the room became thick, suffocating, burning my lungs with every ragged breath.

My vision tunneled, the vibrant colors of our home draining to a dull, monochrome grey.

Betrayal.

It hit me like a physical blow, a punch to the gut that stole all the air from my body.

My own sister.

My husband.

They had been sharing secrets, sharing touches, sharing this right under my nose.
