My heart hammered against my ribs, a frantic drumbeat echoing the anxiety in my chest.

The doctor’s voice had been calm, but the word 'accident' ripped through me like a physical blow.

I raced through the city, every traffic light a personal affront, desperate to reach him.

Just hours ago, Mark had kissed me goodbye, saying he was off to a "critical client meeting" out of state.

It was just another one of his frequent “business trips” that had started becoming increasingly longer.

I trusted him implicitly, our ten years of marriage felt like an unbreakable fortress built on love and shared dreams.

We had planned our entire future together, from the house we’d grow old in to the names of the children we hoped to have.

Now, a single phone call had shattered the comfortable rhythm of our life, summoning me to St. Jude’s Hospital.

They wouldn't give me details over the phone, just that he was stable but had been involved in an accident.

My mind raced, conjuring horrific images, but I pushed them away, focusing only on seeing his face.

The hospital air was thick with the scent of antiseptic and underlying fear, a smell that now makes my stomach churn.

I walked into our hospital room and found my husband with his very pregnant mistress.

I found his room number on the digital board, Room 412, and my hand trembled as I approached the door.

A soft, unfamiliar murmur of voices reached me, not the usual hushed tones of a recovery room.

It sounded almost… intimate.

My brow furrowed in confusion, wondering who else would be there, perhaps a colleague from his 'client meeting.'

Taking a deep, shaky breath, I gently pushed the door open, ready to rush to his side.

My eyes swept across the brightly lit room, searching for my husband.

And then I saw him.

He was sitting upright in the bed, a bandage on his forehead, looking remarkably lucid.

But he wasn't alone.

Cradled in his arms, sitting on the edge of his bed, was a woman I had never seen before.

She was young, with long, dark hair, and her eyes were fixed on Mark with an adoration that sickened me instantly.

My gaze then dropped to her belly, a prominent, unmistakable curve beneath her loose hospital gown.

She was very, very pregnant.

A silent scream tore through my throat, but no sound escaped my lips.

Mark’s head snapped up, his eyes meeting mine, and a flicker of pure panic, then shame, crossed his face.

The woman followed his gaze, her smile faltering as she saw me, her expression turning wary.

My entire world tilted on its axis, every single memory of our shared life flashing before my eyes, twisting into a grotesque lie.

The business trips.

The late nights.

The sudden aloofness I’d dismissed as stress.

It all clicked into place with a horrifying, sickening thud.

My vision blurred, the pristine white walls of the hospital room spinning around me.
