I watched my husband propose to another woman on stage at the Grand Ball.

The scent of lilies and old money still clings to my gown, a cruel reminder of last night.

My hands are shaking so badly I can barely type this.

I was supposed to be happy.

We were supposed to be happy.

Mark and I had been married for twelve years.

Twelve years of building a life, a home, a future together.

We met in college, two ambitious kids with big dreams and even bigger hearts, or so I thought.

He was my rock, my confidante, my everything.

The Grand Ball was always a highlight of our social calendar.

It’s an annual charity event, steeped in tradition and dazzling glamour.

Everyone who's anyone attends, and this year, Mark had been particularly excited.

He kept saying it would be "a night to remember," winking at me.

I spent weeks finding the perfect dress, a midnight blue silk gown that shimmered like starlight.

I wanted to look my best for him, for us.

He told me I looked like a queen, and for a few blissful hours, I felt like one.

We arrived to the opulent ballroom, a symphony of chandeliers, soft music, and polite chatter.

I watched my husband propose to another woman on stage at the Grand Ball.

He held my hand, guiding me through the sea of familiar faces, his grip firm and reassuring.

We danced, we laughed, we clinked champagne glasses, celebrating what felt like another year of our beautiful, stable life.

Then he excused himself, saying he needed to speak with a colleague about a donation pledge.

"Be right back, my love," he whispered, pressing a kiss to my temple.

I smiled, watching him disappear into the crowd, completely unsuspecting.

A subtle unease began to prick at me after twenty minutes, then thirty.

My eyes scanned the room, a nervous flutter starting in my stomach.

He was usually so punctual, so considerate.

Suddenly, the house lights dimmed, and the music softened.

A hush fell over the room, everyone turning their attention to the grand stage at the front.

The host, a well-known local philanthropist, stepped up to the microphone, his voice booming with excitement.

"Ladies and gentlemen," he announced, "we have a very special, unscheduled moment tonight."

My heart gave a little skip.

Could it be?

Was Mark about to surprise me with something romantic, a public declaration of love?

Perhaps a renewed vow, or even a pre-announcement of our upcoming anniversary trip?

Then, Mark walked onto the stage.

My breath caught in my throat.

He wasn't alone.

Beside him stood a woman, stunningly beautiful, with long blonde hair and a radiant smile I’d never seen before.

She looked much younger, effortlessly elegant in a pale pink gown.

The host introduced her as "Miss Eleanor Vance."

Mark took the microphone from the host.

His eyes, my husband's eyes, were sparkling with an unfamiliar adoration as he looked at her.

My world tilted.

He began to speak, his voice clear and resonant, filling the enormous hall.

He spoke of finding "true love," of a "destiny he never knew existed."

He spoke of "a future brighter than any dream."

My mind screamed.

My vision blurred.

He turned to Eleanor, took a small velvet box from his pocket, and knelt.

He knelt there, on the brightly lit stage, in front of hundreds of people, in front of me.

He asked her to marry him.
