My best friend confessed her affair with my fiancé, three days before our wedding.

I still remember the scent of fresh peonies on my kitchen counter.

It was Tuesday, just three days before I was supposed to walk down the aisle.

My wedding dress hung in the spare room, sparkling under the afternoon light.

Mark and I had spent months planning every detail, dreaming of our future.

Chloe, my best friend since kindergarten, was my maid of honor.

She’d been there for everything – the engagement, the bachelorette party, all the dress fittings.

We were practically inseparable, more like sisters than friends.

She was the one I called when I needed to vent, the one who knew all my deepest secrets.

Mark adored her, or so I thought.

They had a comfortable, easy rapport, the kind you’d expect between a fiancé and his bride’s best friend.

Never once did a flicker of doubt cross my mind.

But over the past few weeks, a subtle shift had occurred.

Chloe seemed distant, her usual bubbly self replaced by a nervous energy.

She’d avoid eye contact sometimes, or change the subject abruptly.

Mark, too, was often preoccupied, lost in thought.

He’d brush it off as pre-wedding stress, and I, naive and blissfully happy, believed him.

My best friend confessed her affair with my fiancé, three days before our wedding.

“Everyone gets a little overwhelmed,” he’d say, pulling me into a comforting hug.

I just wanted to make sure everything was perfect for our big day.

On that Tuesday, Chloe asked if we could meet for coffee.

Her voice on the phone was thin, barely a whisper.

My stomach clenched with a premonition I couldn’t place.

I met her at our usual cafe, the one where we’d celebrated countless milestones together.

She was already there, huddled in a corner booth, staring into her untouched latte.

Her eyes were red-rimmed, her face pale.

My heart hammered against my ribs.

“Chloe, what’s wrong?” I asked, sliding into the seat opposite her.

She didn't look up, just traced patterns on the condensation of her glass.

A heavy silence filled the space between us.

Then, she took a shaky breath.

“I… I have to tell you something,” she began, her voice cracking.

My mind raced, jumping to a million different possibilities – a family emergency, a health scare.

Anything but what was coming next.

She finally met my gaze, and the raw pain in her eyes was almost unbearable.

“I slept with Mark,” she blurted out, the words tumbling out in a rush.

The world tilted.

The cafe noise faded into a dull roar.

I felt like I’d been punched in the gut, air knocked clean out of me.

“What?” I managed to choke out, my voice a foreign rasp.

She nodded, tears streaming down her face now.

“It happened a few times,” she whispered.

“The first was two months ago, after your engagement party.”

Two months.

Two months of planning our wedding, of picking flowers, of writing vows.

Two months of her smiling at me, helping me, lying to me.

The betrayal hit me like a tidal wave.

My best friend. My fiancé.

The two people I trusted most in the entire world.
