My heart pounded with a joy I’d never known.
The air smelled of white roses and anticipation.
This was it, my wedding day, the one I’d dreamed of since I was a little girl.
Every detail was perfect, from the lace on my dress to the twinkle lights in the reception hall.
John, my John, stood at the altar, his eyes filled with love as I walked toward him.
He was my rock, my future, the man I swore I would spend eternity with.
Our vows were sincere, ringing with promises of forever.
The ceremony was a blur of happy tears and whispered "I do's."
Then came the reception, a celebration of our new beginning.
Laughter and music filled the grand ballroom.
Everyone we loved was there, sharing in our happiness.
We took to the dance floor for our first dance as husband and wife.
The song was our song, a melody that always made my heart ache in the best way.
John held me close, his hand warm on my back, his breath on my hair.
I closed my eyes, savoring the moment, feeling utterly complete.
Then, a sudden chill prickled my skin.
It wasn't a cold breeze; it was a shift in the atmosphere.
I opened my eyes and saw John’s face change.
His confident smile vanished, replaced by a mask of pure terror.
His gaze was fixed over my shoulder, somewhere beyond the twinkling lights.
My stomach clenched, a cold dread seeping into my veins.
I tried to turn, but he tightened his grip, almost imperceptibly.
"What is it?" I whispered, my voice barely audible above the music.
He just shook his head, his eyes wide and pleading.
Then the music stuttered, slowly fading to an awkward silence.
All eyes in the room turned toward the grand entrance.
A woman stood there, her face a storm of fury and grief.
She wasn't a stranger; I knew her.
It was Sarah, John's ex-girlfriend from years ago, someone he swore was completely out of his life.
She wasn't alone.
A small boy, no older than five, clung to her hand.
His hair was the exact shade of John's.
My breath hitched in my throat; the air grew heavy, suffocating.
Sarah’s eyes, red-rimmed and fierce, locked onto John.
She didn't speak; she just pointed at the boy.
Then, her voice, sharp and trembling, cut through the silence like a knife.
"That's your son, John!" she screamed, her words echoing through the stunned ballroom.
My world tilted, violently.
My knees buckled; John had to hold me up.
The elegant dance floor became a quicksand of disbelief.
"And he's been asking for his daddy," Sarah continued, her voice breaking.
"His daddy, who's currently marrying someone else!"
Silence followed, deafening and brutal.
Every single guest stared, their faces a mixture of shock and pity.
I felt their eyes, burning into my skin, witnessing my perfect life unravel.
John finally found his voice, a desperate, hoarse whisper.
"Sarah, please, not here."
But it was too late.
