It was supposed to be the most beautiful day of my life.
I remember waking up that morning, sunlight streaming through the window, a feeling of pure, unadulterated joy bubbling in my chest.
Every detail was perfect, from the soft lace of my dress to the tiny pearl earrings I’d borrowed from my grandmother.
My bridesmaids were a whirlwind of giggles and excitement, helping me into my gown, ensuring every strand of hair was in place.
My heart pounded with anticipation, a sweet, rhythmic drumbeat of forever.
This was it, my fairy tale, finally coming true.
As I walked down the aisle, my father’s arm a sturdy anchor, I felt like I was floating.
All eyes were on me, but my gaze was fixed solely on him, my fiancé, standing at the altar.
He looked so handsome in his suit, a wide, loving smile gracing his lips.
Our eyes met, and in that moment, the world narrowed to just the two of us, a silent promise exchanged.
The church was filled with soft hymns, the air thick with love and expectation.
I was almost there, just a few more steps, and our new life would begin.
But then, something shifted.
Just as I reached the first pew, a murmur rippled through the congregation.
My father stiffened slightly beside me.
I thought maybe I’d stumbled, or perhaps a guest had arrived late, but the whispers grew louder.
I glanced up at my fiancé, and his confident smile had vanished, replaced by a look of pure, unadulterated terror.
His eyes, usually so warm, were wide with a panic I’d never seen before.
Then, the heavy oak doors at the back of the church, which had just closed behind my procession, slowly creaked open again.
Everyone turned.
My breath hitched in my throat.
A small figure, no older than five, dressed in a tiny, elegant suit, stood hesitantly in the doorway.
It was a little boy.
He had striking blue eyes and a shock of sandy blonde hair that looked eerily familiar.
He gripped a small, plush dinosaur, his lower lip trembling slightly.
He took a few tentative steps down the aisle, his gaze sweeping the crowd until it landed on my fiancé.
Then, his eyes lit up with recognition.
“Daddy?” he called out, his voice a clear, innocent bell that shattered the sacred silence.
The word echoed through the church, each letter a hammer blow to my chest.
I stopped dead in my tracks, the world around me tilting violently.
My father’s grip on my arm tightened, but I barely felt it.
All I could see was that child, that undeniable miniature version of the man I was about to marry, walking towards him.
My fiancé’s face was chalk-white, his jaw slack, his entire body rigid with shock.
He didn't move, couldn't move, as the little boy toddled up to him.
