Tonight was supposed to be perfect.
I’d spent months dreaming of the Grand Ball, of dancing with Mark, of feeling like a princess in my shimmering azure gown.
My heart fluttered with anticipation as I stepped into the opulent ballroom.
The chandeliers glittered like fallen stars, casting a warm glow over a sea of elegant dresses and sharp tuxedos.
Soft orchestral music swelled, filling the air with a dreamlike quality.
I scanned the room, a hopeful smile playing on my lips, searching for Mark.
He was supposed to meet me by the champagne fountain.
My best friend, Sarah, had promised to save us a spot.
But neither of them was there.
A faint unease stirred in my stomach, a tiny, almost imperceptible tremor.
I pushed it away, telling myself they were just running a little late, probably caught up in conversation somewhere.
I walked deeper into the bustling room, past laughing couples and swirling dancers.
The music, once enchanting, now seemed a little too loud, a little too joyful.
I found myself gravitating towards a more secluded alcove, dimly lit and tucked away behind a velvet curtain.
And then I saw them.
My breath hitched, catching somewhere in my throat, a sharp, painful gasp I couldn't release.
Two figures.
Tucked away in the shadows.
Their backs were mostly to me, but I knew the familiar cut of Mark's tuxedo, the way his dark hair curled at his nape.
And the other figure, smaller, her shimmering silver dress a stark contrast to my own blue one.
My mind refused to connect the dots, to make sense of the scene unfolding before my eyes.
My stomach plummeted, a sickening freefall.
Then, he turned slightly, pulling her closer.
And their lips met.
A slow, deliberate, passionate kiss.
The world stopped spinning.
The music faded into a dull thrumming in my ears.
The vibrant colors of the ballroom drained away, leaving only a stark, monochrome horror.
My eyes, wide and unblinking, fixed on the woman’s face as she finally lifted her head slightly, her eyes still closed, a look of pure bliss on her features.
It was Sarah.
My best friend.
My Sarah.
The girl I’d shared everything with since kindergarten.
My confidante, my rock, my chosen sister.
And there she was, in the arms of the man who promised me forever.
My fiancé.
The air left my lungs in a silent whoosh.
I felt a physical tearing sensation in my chest, as if my heart had literally ripped in two.
My vision blurred, not from tears yet, but from a profound, incapacitating shock.
This couldn’t be real.
This was a nightmare, a cruel, twisted joke.
I blinked, hoping to wake up, to find myself in my bed, safe from this grotesque reality.
But they were still there.
His hand was gently cupping her cheek.
Her fingers were tangled in his hair.
It was an intimate gesture, one I knew well, one he’d shared with me countless times.
The betrayal hit me like a physical blow, knocking the wind out of me.
Not just from Mark, but from Sarah.
My best friend.
Every late-night call I thought was innocent, every whispered secret between them that I’d brushed off as "just friend stuff."
