My heart is still racing from yesterday.

I can barely look at the untouched cake in the kitchen.

It was supposed to be the perfect day for Leo, our little six-year-old superhero fanatic.

Months of planning went into his Spider-Man themed birthday party.

Every detail, from the web-slinging decorations to the personalized superhero capes for his friends, was chosen with love.

Leo had been counting down the days, practically vibrating with excitement.

He woke up yesterday morning with the biggest smile, already in his full Spider-Man costume.

The backyard was transformed into a mini Avengers headquarters.

Laughter and shouts of joy filled the air as his friends arrived.

Everything was perfect, truly magical.

My husband, David, was supposed to arrive a little later, after a "work emergency."

I didn’t question it; he’s always been dedicated to his job.

The kids were about to gather for the cake ceremony.

Leo kept looking towards the gate, eager for his dad to show up.

My husband’s secret shattered our son’s birthday, turning his superhero party into a heartbreaking scene.

Then, I saw David’s car pull into the driveway.

A wave of relief washed over me.

But then, another car pulled in right behind him.

My smile faltered, a knot forming in my stomach.

David got out, looking strangely nervous.

He didn't come straight to us.

He walked over to the second car and opened the passenger door.

Out stepped a woman I had never seen before.

She was holding the hand of a little girl, about Leo’s age, also dressed in a princess costume.

My world tilted.

David glanced at me, a desperate, apologetic look in his eyes.

The backyard went silent.

Leo, still wearing his Spider-Man mask, tilted his head.

"Daddy?" he called out, confusion lacing his voice.

David walked towards us, the woman and girl trailing behind him.

He cleared his throat, avoiding my gaze.

“Honey, I… I need to introduce you to someone,” he stammered.

My blood ran cold.

The little girl, oblivious, tugged on the woman’s hand.

“Mommy, is that my daddy?” she asked, loud enough for everyone to hear.

The words hit me like a physical blow.

My entire body went numb.

Guests gasped, murmuring whispers erupting around us.

Leo froze, his superhero mask suddenly feeling too heavy.

He looked from David to the woman, then to the little girl.

The joy drained from his face instantly.

His eyes, usually sparkling with mischief, filled with tears.
