I still wake up in a cold sweat sometimes.
It’s been almost a year, but the image of that day is burned into my mind like a brand.
I had dreamed of my wedding day since I was a little girl, planning every single detail.
Mark was everything I ever wanted in a partner: kind, handsome, ambitious, and he made me laugh until my sides hurt.
We had dated for three wonderful years, building a life together that felt utterly perfect.
Our wedding was set to be the fairytale I’d always envisioned, filled with friends, family, and endless joy.
My best friend, Sarah, had been my Maid of Honor since the moment I got engaged.
We’d known each other since kindergarten, inseparable through every awkward phase and heartbreak.
She knew me better than anyone, even better than Mark sometimes, or so I thought.
In the weeks leading up to the wedding, Sarah had seemed a little off.
She was quieter than usual, a little withdrawn, and sometimes I’d catch her looking at me with an unreadable expression.
I chalked it up to pre-wedding jitters, my own anxiety rubbing off on her, or maybe just the stress of managing all the last-minute details.
"Are you okay, Sal?" I'd asked her once, finding her staring out the window during my final dress fitting.
She'd just forced a smile and said, "Just overwhelmed, Em. Happy for you, truly."
I believed her, because why wouldn't I?
She was my person, my ride-or-die.
The morning of the wedding dawned bright and clear, a perfect blue sky mirroring the happiness bubbling in my chest.
The salon was a flurry of activity, hairspray and laughter filling the air.
Sarah was there, helping me with my veil, adjusting the lace on my dress.
Her hands were shaking slightly, I noticed, but I was too wrapped up in my own excitement to think much of it.
Finally, it was time.
The church was magnificent, adorned with white roses and soft candlelight.
My father took my arm, his eyes glistening with pride.
The organ music swelled, and the heavy doors opened, revealing a sea of smiling faces.
My gaze immediately sought out Mark, standing at the altar, looking impossibly handsome in his tuxedo.
His eyes met mine, and his smile widened, a silent promise of forever in his gaze.
My heart soared.
This was it, my moment.
I walked down the aisle, feeling like I was floating on air, every step bringing me closer to my future.
When I reached the altar, Mark gently took my hand, his touch warm and reassuring.
The officiant began to speak, his voice calm and resonant, outlining the sacred vows we were about to make.
I was barely listening, lost in Mark’s eyes, ready to commit my life to him.
We exchanged rings, small symbols of our enormous love.
Then, as the officiant paused, preparing for us to speak our vows, a sudden movement caught my eye.
Sarah, standing just to my left as my Maid of Honor, took a sharp, gasping breath.
She stepped forward, just one step, but it was enough to subtly break the perfect line of the ceremony.
Everyone noticed.
A hush fell over the congregation, replaced by murmurs of confusion.
I turned to her, a puzzled smile on my face, wondering what was happening.
Her face was ashen, streaked with tears that were not of joy.
Her eyes were wide, filled with a desperate, tortured plea.
"Sarah?" I whispered, my voice barely audible.
She looked from me to Mark, her chest heaving.
Then, in a voice that trembled but was undeniably clear, she spoke.
"Emily, you can't marry him!" she cried, her voice cracking the pristine silence.
The words hung in the air, a punch to my gut.
My smile vanished.
Mark’s face went white, his grip on my hand tightening almost painfully.
"Sarah, what are you doing?!" Mark hissed, his voice low and furious.
But Sarah ignored him, her gaze fixed on me, pleading.
"He has a child, Emily! A little girl in Arizona! He never told you!"
The world tilted.
A child?
