My heart was absolutely bursting with joy that morning.
It was Lily’s fifth birthday, and we’d been planning this unicorn-themed party for months.
Every detail, from the rainbow balloons to the glittery table settings, was perfect.
But the centerpiece, the absolute showstopper, was the custom-made unicorn cake.
I’d spent weeks agonizing over the design, finding the perfect baker, and paying a small fortune for it.
Lily's eyes had lit up like Christmas morning when she saw it cooling on the kitchen counter earlier.
My sister, Sarah, was supposed to be helping me set up the last few things in the living room.
She arrived an hour before the guests, full of big smiles and "Happy Birthday!" wishes.
I was feeling a little stressed, rushing between tasks, so I was grateful for her presence.
"Could you just keep an eye on things here for a bit while I get dressed?" I asked her, gesturing towards the kitchen and the still-unopened party favors.
She nodded cheerfully, already sipping the iced tea I'd poured her.
I hurried upstairs, excited to put on the dress Lily had picked out for me.
The sound of the first doorbell ringing jolted me back into motion.
"They're here!" Lily shrieked from downstairs, her tiny voice filled with pure, unadulterated excitement.
I grabbed my phone, intending to snap a quick photo of the cake before the cutting ceremony.
As I walked into the kitchen, the sunlight streaming through the window seemed to freeze the scene.
My breath hitched in my throat; the air felt suddenly thin and cold.
There, on the counter, was Lily’s magnificent unicorn cake.
But it wasn't magnificent anymore.
One of the delicate fondant ears was snapped off and lying on the counter beside it.
The rainbow mane, painstakingly crafted from layers of colored buttercream, was smeared and smudged beyond recognition.
Someone had clearly run their finger right through the unicorn's face, leaving a gaping, ugly scar in the pristine frosting.
A wave of nausea washed over me, churning my stomach.
No, this couldn't be happening.
Not to Lily's birthday cake.
Not after all the effort, the anticipation, the sheer happiness it represented.
My eyes darted around the kitchen, desperately searching for an explanation, for an animal, for anything that could have caused such devastation.
Then I saw Sarah, standing by the pantry, her back to me, fiddling with something on the shelf.
A sickening dread began to coil in my gut.
Her posture seemed… off.
Too still.
Too quiet.
"Sarah?" My voice was barely a whisper, a strained, disbelieving sound.
She slowly turned around, a flicker of something unreadable in her eyes.
Guilt?
Defiance?
"Oh, hey," she said, her smile faltering, not quite reaching her eyes.
"What... what happened to the cake?" I managed to choke out, my gaze fixed on the ruined masterpiece.
