My hands are still trembling as I type this, and the sting in my eyes won't go away.
Yesterday was supposed to be a day of pure joy, a bubble of happiness for my sweet Liam.
He had been counting down the days to his fifth birthday party for months.
All he talked about was the bouncy castle, the superhero cake, and his friends coming over.
Little did I know, it would become the day his innocent world shattered, and my own heart broke alongside it.
Liam’s dad, Mark, and I separated six months ago, and it's been an incredibly tough time for all of us.
We’ve been gentle with Liam, explaining that Daddy was just away for a while, working things out, because we hadn't figured out how to tell him about the divorce yet.
We wanted to do it together, in a calm, controlled environment, with love and reassurance.
We both agreed he was too young to fully grasp the finality of it, and we were waiting for the right moment, a kinder moment.
I had meticulously planned every detail of this party, trying to create a shield of normal happiness around him.
My sister, Sarah, was there, supposedly helping me.
She’s always been a bit… unpredictable, a little bit jealous maybe, but I never in a million years thought she'd cross this line.
The party was in full swing, kids laughing, balloons everywhere, the smell of pizza and sugary treats filling the air.
Liam was beaming, running around in his Captain America costume, feeling like the king of the world.
It was exactly what I had hoped for him.
I was in the kitchen, cutting up some fruit for the healthier-minded parents, just for a moment away from the chaos.
Suddenly, a strange quiet descended over the living room, a hush that prickled my skin.
I walked back in, carrying a large bowl, and stopped dead in my tracks.
There, in the corner, near the untouched birthday cake with its five unlit candles, was Sarah.
She was crouched down, her face close to Liam’s, holding his small hand.
Liam was looking up at her, his big blue eyes wide, a puzzled frown on his face.
Then, Sarah leaned in, her voice unnervingly clear despite the low murmur of other parents.
“Sweetie,” she said, her tone falsely sweet, “your dad isn’t coming home.
He’s not ever coming back to live here with you guys.”
The words hit me like a physical blow, knocking the air right out of my lungs.
My heart seized in my chest, a cold wave of shock washing over me.
I dropped the fruit bowl, the sound of glass shattering echoing in the sudden silence.
All eyes turned to me, then to Sarah, then to Liam.
Liam's lower lip began to tremble uncontrollably, his eyes welling up with tears that instantly overflowed.
“What?” he whispered, his voice tiny and broken.
Sarah stood up slowly, a strange, almost defiant look on her face as she met my gaze.
"He needed to know, Amy," she stated, as if she had just performed a noble deed.
"You were just going to keep coddling him forever."
