My stomach dropped seeing my fiancé on one knee… for my sister… at the Grand Ball.

The scent of white roses and old money hung heavy in the air.

Tonight was supposed to be magical, a night I’d dreamt of since I was a little girl.

My heart thrummed with a nervous excitement as I adjusted the sequined strap of my gown.

Ethan was waiting for me, somewhere amidst the glittering crowd of the Grand Ball.

He’d been acting a little strange all week, secretive, almost giddy.

I brushed it off, chalking it up to the pressure of his big work presentation.

But a tiny, hopeful part of me wondered if tonight, this night, might hold an even bigger surprise.

I imagined him pulling me onto the dance floor, whispering sweet nothings, perhaps even…

My breath hitched at the thought.

He’d said we needed to talk, a serious conversation, after dessert.

I arrived fashionably late, a swirl of sapphire blue amidst the muted elegance.

The ballroom was a breathtaking spectacle of crystal chandeliers and polished marble.

Everywhere I looked, couples danced, champagne flutes clinked, laughter echoed.

My eyes scanned the room, searching for his familiar, handsome face.

Then I saw her.

My sister, Clara, standing near the grand staircase, bathed in the soft glow of a nearby candelabra.

She looked radiant, unusually so, in a shimmering silver dress I’d never seen before.

My stomach dropped seeing my fiancé on one knee… for my sister… at the Grand Ball.

A flicker of annoyance, then affection, crossed through me.

Clara and I had always been close, inseparable even, despite our differences.

I started to walk towards her, a smile already forming on my lips.

But then I noticed someone else, standing directly in front of her.

It was Ethan.

My Ethan.

He was facing her, his back to me, holding something small and dark in his hand.

A hush seemed to fall over that corner of the room, distinct from the general murmur.

People were gathering, murmuring excitedly, pointing.

My steps faltered.

A cold dread began to seep into my veins.

No, it couldn’t be.

Not like this.

Not here.

I pushed through a small cluster of guests, my eyes fixed on the scene.

Ethan turned slightly, revealing his profile, his face alight with an emotion I couldn’t quite decipher.

He smiled at Clara, a tender, knowing smile that twisted something deep inside me.

And then, in slow motion, he got down on one knee.

The small, dark object in his hand glinted under the chandelier light.

It was a ring box.

My vision swam, the exquisite ballroom fading into a blur of meaningless shapes and colors.

No.

My mind screamed the word, but no sound escaped my lips.

Clara gasped, a hand flying to her mouth, her eyes wide with what looked like genuine shock.

Or was it?

A horrible, dawning realization began to bloom in my chest, a poisonous flower.

The whispers around me grew louder, clearer.

“Oh, how romantic!” someone cooed.

“I knew he was going to do it tonight!” another exclaimed.

“Look at her face!”

I felt like an invisible spectator, watching my own life unravel from afar.

My fiancé, the man I loved, the man I was going to marry, was proposing.

To my sister.
