You never think it will happen to you.

You see stories on TV, you read posts online, but deep down, you always believe your love, your life, is different.

I certainly did.

Liam was everything to me, my rock, my future, the man I was going to marry in just three months.

And Chloe, my best friend since kindergarten, was more than family; she was the sister I never had, my maid of honor.

Our lives were perfectly intertwined, a beautiful tapestry of shared dreams and laughter.

We had just bought our first home together, a charming little bungalow with a sunny kitchen overlooking a sprawling backyard.

It was our sanctuary, filled with the aroma of freshly brewed coffee and the quiet hum of domestic bliss.

I spent countless hours in that kitchen, picturing our life unfolding there, planning everything from morning routines to holiday dinners.

Liam and I would sit at the island, brainstorming honeymoon destinations and baby names, our hands clasped tight.

Chloe was always there, too, laughing with us, offering advice, always supportive.

Or so I thought.

That Tuesday started like any other, a mundane afternoon of errands and last-minute wedding details.

My stomach dropped when I overheard my fiancé and best friend planning their future in our kitchen.

I came home early, excited to surprise Liam with his favorite takeout for dinner.

The house was quiet as I unlocked the front door, the late afternoon sun casting long shadows.

I heard voices coming from the kitchen.

It wasn't unusual; Liam often called Chloe to discuss wedding plans or just to chat.

A warm, familiar feeling spread through me; my two favorite people, together, making our future.

I paused in the hallway, about to call out a greeting, when a specific phrase caught my ear.

Chloe’s voice, soft and hushed, but undeniably clear, cut through the silence.

“Are you sure about this, Liam? It’s a huge step.”

My smile faltered.

A huge step?

What could they be discussing that sounded so serious?

Liam responded, his voice equally low, "Of course, Chloe. It’s what we've always wanted, isn't it?"

My blood ran cold.

"We've?"

A strange, sickening twist started in my gut.

I crept closer, instinctively, my heart beginning to pound a frantic rhythm against my ribs.

I peered around the corner, my breath catching in my throat.

They were at our kitchen island, the very spot where Liam and I had planned our life.

Chloe was leaning over a laptop, her arm brushing Liam's.

He had his hand on her lower back, a gesture so intimate, so familiar, yet utterly foreign when directed at her.

My eyes fixated on the screen.

It wasn't a wedding planner site or honeymoon brochures.

It was a real estate website.

Open on the screen was a listing for a quaint farmhouse, miles away from our city, a place I had vaguely mentioned once as a dream home.

Chloe pointed to a photo of the sunroom.

"And imagine the light in here for our art studio."

Liam chuckled softly, a sound that usually warmed me but now curdled my stomach.
