The day before our wedding, I caught my fiancé with my maid of honor.

My heart is a gaping wound, a hollow space where joy used to live.

Just yesterday, I was floating on air, humming with anticipation for the biggest day of my life.

I was marrying Mark, the man I thought was my soulmate, my future, my everything.

Sarah, my best friend since kindergarten, my maid of honor, was fussing over last-minute details with me, her smile as bright as mine.

We had spent months planning, every little detail carefully chosen to represent our love story.

Our venue was booked, the flowers ordered, my dress hanging, pristine and perfect, in the closet.

Mark and I were supposed to meet later for a final, quiet dinner, a moment just for us before the beautiful chaos.

He had texted me earlier, saying he was running late from a "bachelor party debrief" with his groomsmen.

I laughed it off, picturing him, probably exhausted but happy, heading home to get ready.

But a tiny, nagging voice in the back of my mind had been whispering for weeks.

Little things: Mark's phone always face-down, hushed conversations with Sarah I’d accidentally overhear, sudden, awkward silences when I entered a room.

The day before our wedding, I caught my fiancé with my maid of honor.

I dismissed them all, blaming wedding stress, my own anxieties, anything but the truth.

He loved me, didn't he?

Sarah was my sister, wasn't she?

This morning, I realized I’d left my emergency kit for the wedding at Mark's apartment, a silly bag with safety pins, breath mints, and a tiny sewing kit.

I decided to surprise him, grab it, and maybe leave him a sweet note.

The air in the hallway felt heavy, almost suffocating, as I approached his door.

I heard muffled laughter, not Mark's deep chuckle, but a lighter, breathy sound.

A pit formed in my stomach, cold and hard.

I fumbled with the key, my hands suddenly clammy, my heart pounding a frantic rhythm against my ribs.

The door clicked open, and a wave of sound hit me – the low hum of music, and something else, something primal and unmistakable.

My vision tunneled, every sound amplified, every detail sharpened into a cruel, vivid picture.

I pushed the door open just a crack, peering through the narrow space.

And then I saw it.

My fiancé, Mark, entangled with Sarah, my maid of honor, in our bed, his hands in her hair, her eyes closed in... bliss.

The pristine white sheets, meant for our marital bed, were rumpled evidence of their vile secret.

My emergency kit, still clutched in my trembling hand, dropped to the floor with a soft thud that echoed like thunder in the silent apartment.

They sprang apart, Mark’s eyes wide with a horror that mirrored my own, Sarah pulling the sheet up to her neck, her face a mask of shame and fear.

But it was too late.

The image was seared into my brain, an irreversible scar.

A raw, guttural cry tore from my throat, a sound I didn’t recognize as my own.

My world, the beautiful, perfectly constructed world I had built with Mark, shattered into a million irreparable pieces around me.
