The Grand Ball revealed my fiancé's secret proposal to another woman, shattering my world.

I remember every single stitch of that dress, every hopeful thought that spun through my mind as I walked towards the ballroom.

It was supposed to be our night.

Tonight, I truly believed, was the night Mark would finally ask me to marry him.

He’d hinted at it for weeks, those little smiles and knowing glances.

My best friend, Sarah, had helped me pick out the sapphire blue gown, saying it was the color of destiny.

The air in the grand hall was thick with the scent of lilies and anticipation.

Crystal chandeliers dripped light onto polished marble floors, reflecting the happy faces of hundreds of guests.

I scanned the room, a flutter in my stomach, searching for Mark.

He was usually waiting for me, his hand reaching out to guide me through the crowd.

But tonight, he wasn't there.

A tiny prickle of unease started to form, but I pushed it down.

Maybe he was just held up, or getting me a drink.

I navigated through clusters of laughing people, my heels clicking softly, my eyes still searching.

The Grand Ball revealed my fiancé's secret proposal to another woman, shattering my world.

Then I saw him.

He was on the far side of the room, near the enormous fountain, bathed in the soft glow of fairy lights.

He wasn't alone.

A knot formed in my stomach, tight and cold.

Standing with him was Cassandra, my childhood nemesis, now a vague acquaintance, always a little too close for comfort.

My smile faltered, replaced by a frown of confusion.

Why was he spending so much time with her?

As I started to walk closer, a strange silence seemed to fall over that corner of the room.

People were turning, whispering, some even gasping.

My heart began to pound a frantic rhythm against my ribs.

I pushed through the last few people, my eyes fixed on Mark and Cassandra.

Then I saw it.

He was on one knee.

My breath hitched, catching in my throat like shards of glass.

My beautiful, hopeful night, the one I had dreamed of for years, was unfolding before me, but it wasn't for me.

Mark, my Mark, was on one knee, holding a velvet ring box, looking up at Cassandra.

Her face, usually so composed, was flushed with delight, tears welling in her eyes.

She said yes.

A roar, or maybe it was just a deafening silence, filled my ears.

The world tilted on its axis, the grand hall spinning around me.

The sparkling lights became blurred streaks, the music a distant, mocking hum.

I felt like an invisible ghost, watching my own life unravel from the outside.

My fiancé, the man I loved, the man who had promised me forever, was proposing to another woman.

Not just any woman, but the one person who had always tried to overshadow me, even back in grade school.

The ring glinted on Cassandra's finger as Mark slid it on, a perfect, blinding symbol of my destruction.
