The hospital called: my 'single' husband was in an accident with his pregnant wife.

My morning had started like any other, filled with the soft promise of a perfect Saturday.

The sun streamed through our bedroom window, painting golden stripes across the duvet.

I remember laughing with Mark over coffee, planning a quiet evening for just the two of us.

He kissed me goodbye, heading off to his "business golf trip," a routine I never questioned.

Our life felt so complete, a carefully constructed mosaic of shared dreams and unspoken understanding.

I spent the day running errands, feeling light and content, humming along to the radio.

Then my phone buzzed, displaying an unknown number with a local area code.

"This is St. Jude's Hospital," a calm voice stated, shattering the peace of my afternoon.

My heart immediately lurched; I pictured Mark, a fender bender, nothing serious, I hoped.

"We have a patient here, Mark Thompson," the voice continued, cool and professional.

"He's been involved in a serious car accident," she explained, sending a cold shiver down my spine.

"Are you his next of kin?" she asked, a standard question that made me feel a sudden, strange unease.

"Yes," I managed, my voice thin, "I'm his wife, Sarah."

There was a pause, a breath held on the other end of the line.

"Mrs. Thompson," she began, her tone shifting, "we also have his wife, Rebecca, here at the hospital."

The hospital called: my 'single' husband was in an accident with his pregnant wife.

The world tilted, the floor beneath me suddenly a treacherous, spinning abyss.

Rebecca?

My grip on the phone tightened until my knuckles ached, my mind struggling to process the impossible words.

"What are you talking about?" I whispered, my voice barely audible, a frantic tremor starting in my chest.

"Mark Thompson arrived in critical condition," she reiterated, oblivious to the bomb she had just dropped.

"And his wife, Rebecca Thompson, was in the car with him, she’s also in the ER."

"She’s in shock but stable," the nurse added, as if this detail could somehow make sense of the madness.

"And she’s pregnant, Mrs. Thompson."

The receiver slipped from my numb fingers, clattering to the hardwood floor, echoing the shattering of my reality.

Pregnant.

Rebecca.

My husband.

My perfect, devoted husband.

The drive to the hospital was a blur, a terrifying sequence of red lights and flashing images.

My hands clenched the steering wheel, my mind a storm of disbelief and blinding pain.

How could this be happening?

Every memory, every shared laugh, every "I love you" felt like a cruel, calculated lie.

I stumbled through the automatic doors of St. Jude's, the sterile white lights assaulting my senses.

The air was thick with the scent of antiseptic and unspoken grief.

I approached the information desk, my throat tight, my voice a ragged whisper.

"I'm here for Mark Thompson," I managed, the words catching in my chest.

"I'm his wife, Sarah."

The kind-faced receptionist looked up, her brow furrowing slightly as she typed.

"Ah, yes," she said softly, "he's in room 312."

"His other wife is in the waiting room just over there," she added, pointing vaguely with a pen.

Other wife.

The phrase hit me like a physical blow, stealing the air from my lungs.

My gaze followed her gesture, landing on a small waiting area, tucked away from the main bustle.

There she was.

A woman with long, dark hair, clutching her swollen belly, her face pale and tear-streaked.
