The night before my wedding, I caught my best friend in bed with my fiancé.

My heart was bursting with a joy so pure, I thought it would last forever.

The air shimmered with anticipation for tomorrow, my wedding day.

I was marrying Mark, the man I truly believed was my soulmate.

My best friend, Chloe, had been by my side through everything.

She was my rock, my confidante, practically family.

We had spent the entire day giggling, doing last-minute beauty rituals.

She helped me organize my gown, a cascade of ivory lace and dreams.

Chloe even picked up the rings from the jeweler, an extra task I’d gratefully handed over.

Everything felt perfect, almost too perfect.

As evening fell, we shared a final glass of champagne.

She wished me sweet dreams and a lifetime of happiness.

Chloe said she needed to head home to get some rest for the big day.

I hugged her tightly, thanking her for being the best maid of honor a girl could ask for.

She left my apartment, and a quiet calm settled around me.

But sleep wouldn't come.

My mind raced with joyful thoughts of the ceremony, the future.

A sudden, silly thought struck me.

I had left a small, embroidered handkerchief – my "something blue" – at Mark’s apartment earlier.

It was tucked away in his drawer, a little surprise for him.

I smiled, thinking of slipping it into his jacket pocket in the morning.

The night before my wedding, I caught my best friend in bed with my fiancé.

It was a trivial thing, but I wanted everything to be just right.

I decided to sneak over to his place, just a few blocks away.

It was late, probably past midnight.

The streets were quiet, illuminated by the gentle glow of streetlights.

My stomach fluttered with a mix of excitement and mild nerves.

I pictured Mark fast asleep, oblivious, ready for the biggest day of our lives.

I let myself into his building, my steps soft on the carpeted stairs.

Reaching his door, I fumbled for my spare key, a key I thought represented our shared future.

As I turned the lock, I heard something.

A low murmur, then a soft laugh.

My heart gave a strange, cold lurch.

Mark was supposed to be with his groomsmen, having a “last hurrah.”

I paused, my hand still on the doorknob, a knot tightening in my stomach.

Maybe he came home early?

Maybe he was on a late-night call?

Another sound, distinct and unmistakable, reached my ears.

It was a woman’s laugh, familiar.

Too familiar.

A wave of icy dread washed over me, numbing my fingers.

My breath hitched in my throat.

Slowly, carefully, I pushed the door open, just a crack.

The apartment was dimly lit, the bedroom door ajar.

A sliver of light escaped, casting long shadows.

My eyes, unwilling to believe what they were seeing, focused.

There, in our bed, in the bed we were supposed to share for the rest of our lives…

My vision blurred, but the image was etched forever into my soul.

Two figures.

Intertwined.

Mark’s familiar dark hair, Chloe’s unmistakable blonde.

The world tilted on its axis.

A silent scream tore through my chest, but no sound escaped my lips.

My body froze, every muscle turned to stone.

It was a nightmare, surely.

A cruel, twisted hallucination.

But the air was thick with their perfume, with their betrayal.

I tasted bile in my mouth.

My "best friend." My "fiancé."

The words mocked me, echoing in the cavern of my broken heart.

They stirred, and Chloe’s head lifted.

Her eyes, wide with shock, met mine.

A strangled gasp escaped her.
